Code words, hiding in plain sight helped gay bars in Tampa endure history of harassment

Local patrons were familiar with the kind of treatment that fueled the riots 50 years ago at Greenwich Village’s Stonewall Inn.

TAMPA — Mark Bias and Carrie West painted the rails of their pool table in the rainbow colors of the LGBTQ flag.

The colorful makeover honors the table’s history as a feature of Tampa’s first gay bar, the Knotty Pine.

Now, the married Ybor City couple are putting the table up for sale during an online auction Friday as they liquidate belongings they’ve accumulated during their time as leaders of the pride movement in Tampa.

Potential bidders can enter “North A Street” into the search bar at maxsold.com.

“This thing has seen all the changes,” said West, 67, noting that the pool table passed through six gay bars before the couple bought it 20 years ago from the KiKiKi 3 bar. “All these things have.”

The auction items span a period of growing acceptance for gay people in American society, he said. Today, communities on both sides of Tampa Bay elect openly gay candidates, and this weekend, they host Pride parades.

“It’s unbelievable how open it is now,” West said.

A gay bar figures prominently in that timeline — Greenwich Village’s Stonewall Inn, where riots broke out 50 years ago when homosexuality was illegal and patrons lashed out against constant raids.

The history of Tampa’s own gay bars mirrors the changes nationwide.

The Knotty Pine opened in the 1940s on the corner of Polk and Morgan streets. When police entered the bar, those dancing would quickly switch from same-sex to opposite-sex partners.

In 1956, 26-year-old Carl DeLong Jr. was found beaten unconscious along Riverhills Drive in Tampa and died a month later. He was last seen alive at the Knotty Pine.

Police used the crime as a pretense to intensify their crackdown.

In July 1957, Tampa’s Jimmie White’s Tavern was raided.

“My orders came from the top,” an officer was quoted as saying in the Tampa Tribune. “We’re going to put a stop to this activity once and for all.”

No one was charged, but 12 women dressed in “mannish clothing” were photographed and fingerprinted, according to the Tribune.

The LGBTQ community was also targeted by the John’s Committee established in 1956 by the Florida Legislature to root out what were deemed to be subversive activities. The committee was disbanded in 1965.

In 1993, details of the committee’s efforts were made public. The Tampa Bay Times reported that a local judge cruised gay bars in search of women to extort. They could either perform at a stag party or he would prosecute them.

Still, by the 1970s, gay bars had grown more common, said Manny Alvarez, 56, who in the early-2000s owned the gay-themed Streetcar Charlie’s restaurant in Ybor City.

“Kennedy Boulevard was the gay epicenter,” Alvarez said. “It had The Old Plantation and Rene’s Lounge.”

In Pinellas County, the Lighted Tree and Marilyn’s Closet were popular gay spots and Pass-a-Grille Beach was “very Key Westy gay,” he said.

On Sundays, the Old Plantation House — an upscale alternative to speakeasy-style gay bars — was the place to be, said Bobby Stoner, who was the DJ there.

“It was a very energetic,” said Stoner, 69. “People would come from St. Pete just to dance.”

But harassment continued, said Kim Bachschmid, 65, who in the late-1970s owned Kim’s Magic Fantasy Room in Tampa.

Bachschmid never experience harassment at her bar but police would visit Tampa’s Carousel to check patrons’ underwear, she said, and “if a woman was wearing boxers, she was arrested.”

In the late-1970s, arsonists targeted several Tampa gay bars. But they weren’t hate crimes, West and Bias said. Rather, many believed it was organized crime torching the competition.

One victim was Ybor City’s El Goya.

But the bar reopened on a grander scale, as El Goya Mall — offering five lounges including one with a country-western theme.

“The entrance had a giant lagoon with a huge waterfall,” said Alvarez, the former restaurant owner. “It was legendary.”

El Goya Mall attracted heterosexuals, too. One regular was former Tampa mayor Dick Greco, who would take out-of-town guests there to see the drag shows.

This mainstream status made it the safest place for LGBTQ people to frequent without fear of being outed.

“We parked five blocks away from other bars because we didn’t want to be seen,” Bachschmid said.

Bias and West moved to the area in 1980. Gay bar patrons, they said, whispered the code phrase, “Mrs. Kennedy is in the room,” when anyone spotted undercover cops, and, “Dorothy is on her way,” when a raid was coming.

“Jacqueline Kennedy was so was so pretty and glamorous,” Bias explained, “and, ‘Are you a friend of Dorothy?’ was a gay pickup line.”

Bias and West were regulars at Rene’s, popular for its pool and cabanas. Police would park around the corner and pull over patrons leaving the establishment.

“They asked, ‘Sir, do you know what type of bar that is?'” said Bias, 62.

They replied no, and said they were cousins.

“If we told them the truth we might have been arrested and interrogated,” West said.

In the late-1990s, the couple opened a store selling LGBTQ-themed tchotchkes, art and films in St. Petersburg’s nine-acre Suncoast Resort. The complex was heralded as a gay and lesbian convention center until it closed in 2007.

It was widely believed that police stopped their harassment of gay bars in the 1980s, West and Bias said.

But that’s not true, they said.

They believe it continued into the late-90s — under the guise of narcotics raids.

“They weren’t there for drugs,” Bias said. “It was harassment.”

Below is a link to the Tampa Bay Times article on 6-19-19 about our Rainbow Pool table.  Its is just one of the many items in our online auction starting tomorrow.  The table was in the original Gay Bar The  Knotty Pine in the 1940’s and was in many more gay clubs after. We purchased the table from the KIKIKI III in the 1990’s. We had to wait late until the manager was there to pay for the table. It was sometime after midnight.  Quickly we realized that it would not fit into our van.  Since we lived 2 blocks away we had an idea…. Back into the bar we offered FREE Beer to anyone who would help us move the table.  About 12 of us picked the table up and were ½ across Kennedy Blvd when here came a fire truck. Blowing its horns!!! We made it across the street and had just turned north on Albany Ave. 3 Police cars came flying up and stopped. One in front, one on the side and one behind us. The cute cop spoke into his radio… “Just pulled over a pool table going north bound on Albany Ave.”  One of our friends who is a famous architect started to laugh. The officer got into his face and said “Do you Think this is funny??? He said YES!!!  The officer asked where did we steal the table from. We explained the whole story and showed him our receipt. He then asked where are we going? We said about 60 ft straight up then down the alley 50 ft. With that the officer put on his blue lights and escorted us to our carport. We put the table in place closed the door and all started to laugh. Well… all but the 3 guys who had violations of probations!!! The stories this table could tell!  LMAO

It is always interesting in how people meet. One couple we know had a very unusual meeting. Our friend had just rented an apartment in Ybor City.  The 1st Saturday night in the new apartment there was the sound of somebody trying to open his door.  When he opened the door the guy said “Who are You?” and our friend said “No Who are you?” It turned out that the guy at the door was the apartment’s former renter. He was very cocktailed and forgot that he didn’t live here anymore. LMAO!!! Our friend just laughed and said that he had noticed him in the club (Bradley’s on 7th) earlier.  The guy apologized and started to leave. Our friend said no wait maybe you should sleep on the couch and not drive. 8 years later they are still together…..  Talk about LOVE knocking on your door LMAO

There was a Gay Bar on Central Ave in St. Petersburg called DT’s. The club and building was sold to Grand Central Station. I worked several years here. My 1st day a guy walks into the club and orders a beer. He then said to me there was a key on the cash register with his name and $1.oo beers. I laughed and to my surprise there was a dollar key!!! His name was Dwayne.  He was the previous owners of the club. In the sale of the club he had negotiated dollar beers. He told me that DT’s meant Dwayne’s Turn. Several of his friends had been owners and now it was his turn. LMAO We became good friends and at his garage sale we purchased his light from over the pool table. This is just one more of the Gay Historical items we have at our upcoming estate sale. FMI https://www.facebook.com/events/448018662632675/?active_tab=discussion

One of the items FOR SALE at our estate (May 31, 2019) is our pool table. This not just any pool table but a pool table rich in Tampa LGBT History.  We hope it goes to a good new home. This Pool table was from the 1950’s at the Gay Bar “The Knotty Pine” it then went on to… “CoCo Joe’s”, “KIKIKI #1”, “KIKIKI #2”, “Old Plantation”, “KIKIKI #3”. About 20 years ago we purchased the table. We had to wait for the owner of the club Cesar (Who was Rene’s Brother) to pay him. He finally arrived after midnight. The pool table would not fit into our van so we decided to carry it the 2 ½ block home. We announced to the boys anyone want to help carry it home for beers and there were several takers. We were half way across Kennedy Blvd. when here comes a fire truck!!! OMG Hurry guys. We made it across Kennedy and were on Albany ½ block north of Kennedy. Then here comes 3 police cars!!! One in front, one back and one on the side. The office got out of his car and said into his radio “Just pulled over a pool table going north on Albany.” Our one friend, Glen started to laugh. The officer said do you think this is funny. Glen said YES!!!!  How fast were we going? What had happened was the firemen had called in a stolen pool table.  We showed the officers our receipt. He asked “How far are we going?” We told then 50 ft turning right into the alley & 50ft more. The police laughed too and gave us a 5 minute police escort to out carport. The rest of the night we played pool until the sun came up. The guys who helped us carry the table… well several were wanted by the police for parole violations LMAO.  We then had the broken slate top removed and replaced with marine grade plywood. This wood needs to be replaced again. Did you know there are 6 bumpers on a pool table and 6 colors in the Rainbow flag? YES we had the bumpers changed into the rainbow colors.   https://www.facebook.com/events/448018662632675/

A friend of ours lived about 25 miles north of Tampa. One Saturday Night she called an Uber to take her to Ybor City. When the car arrived the driver said ‘that is a long trip.” She laughed and said “yes but it’s cheaper than a DUI.” The driver then said “Do you mind if I pray 1st?” She said OK. With that the driver got out of the car and went in front of the car where he put down his prayer rug and began to pray to Muhammad. He finished and got back into the car. Our friend asked “is everything was OK?” The driver said “Yes we will be protected on our long journey.” With that he took off. We asked how the trip went. She said fine but was scared the whole way…..  What would you have done??

Tea Cup was having dinner on the sidewalk in front to Tequila’s, with a favorite straight married couple. Sitting next to us were 2 older ladies. Both had way too much makeup on and were wearing their favorite party clothes from 20 years ago. The one lean over to me and said “You two make a nice couple. How long have you been married? ”LMAO I said laughing “OH NO I’m her boy toy! He is the husband!!!”  She gave us a strange look, then we all laughed. The next day the 2 women came back to Tequila’s where I was bartending.  The ladies ordered there cocktails then the one reached over and grabbed my hand. With a big smile she said that she is in town until Wednesday. Then in broken English said “I take you to dinner tomorrow and after we will have some fun together.”  I quickly made an excuse not to go and thanked her. When the ladies were leaving she gave me $40 for their $38.00 tab and told me to keep the change. Then Hands me a folded napkin with a note and WINKS to me. LMAO LMAO Here is what the napkin said. I blocked out her phone number LMAO

The Suncoast Resort https://www.facebook.com/suncoast.resortmemories was the Worlds largest LGBT Resort & Complex. On the 1st floor were 30+ shops. We had our MC Film Fest Store there from day 1 to the day they closed. One Easter the merchants came together and purchased 1,000’s of Easter Eggs. The idea was to fill them with discounts, beads and promotional items for the stores. We gave a box of eggs to the Suncoast resort too.  The management though the idea was stupid. The managers went to the volley ball court and filled each egg with sand and taped them. All the eggs were put into a huge box and mixed up.  That night the Easter Bunny went throughout the complex passing out 1,000s of eggs. To the surprise and alarm to the resort, people actually opened the eggs to see what was inside. Their mean trick backfired and there was sand everywhere!! On top of the bars, on the dance floor, in room carpets & EVERYWHERE LMAO the joke was on them. You just cannot make this up!!!!

On a Sunday a 20 something guy walked into the bar with his parents and grandparents. They all were drinking a lot. Then the drag show started. All 5 of them were having a great time especially the son.  After the son got his 3rd kiss from the drag queen’s he turns to his Mom and said “Well, Mom I guess you can tell that I’m Gay.”   The Mom looked surprise and said “Really?” Just then the Grandmother leans over and said to the Mom “Oh Joan we all have know he is Gay for a long time” Then gives her grandson a big hug. Hum…. Grandmothers always know LOL

His wife is buried somewhere else. Within view of his grave is the grave of his Asian landscaper. As one guide told us this was they can be in view of each other forever.
