Rupert Everett Blasts Gay Parents, GLAAD Calls ‘Insult’ ‘Outdated’

Credit: Target Presse Agentur Gmbh/Getty Images.

Though Rupert Everett blazed a trail for homosexual actors when he came out decades ago, he’s now saying that gay men don’t make good parents. You may remember Rupert in the gay themed play then 1984 movie, “Another Country.”

The actor best known for “Shakespeare in Love” and “My Best Friend’s Wedding” told Britain’s Sunday Times Magazine that his mother has met his boyfriend but “still wishes I had a wife and kids.”

“She thinks children need a father and a mother and I agree with her,” he said. “I can’t think of anything worse than being brought up by two gay dads.”

“Some people might not agree with that. Fine! That’s just my opinion,” he said, adding that he doesn’t consider himself part of the “gay community.”

In response, GLAAD president Herndon Graddick said, “Since Everett shared his outdated opinion, gay parents, as well as their friends and families, have voiced overwhelming disappointment. Children aren’t hurt when raised by caring gay parents, but they are when uninformed people in the public eye insult their families.”

The Family Equality Council combated Everett’s opinion with statistics, saying in a statement that “more than 30 years of scientific research shows overwhelmingly that children raised by parents who are LGBT do equally as well as their counterparts raised by heterosexual parents.”

Everett, 53, angered gay rights advocates in 2009 when he said coming out in Hollywood is “not that advisable” and “just doesn’t work” for actors seeking longevity in their careers.

National Coming Out Day: Key Moments in Fight For Equal Rights

Rob O’Neal/Florida Keys News Bureau/AP Photo

Twenty-five years ago today, half a million people participated in a historic march on Washington, D.C., for gay rights.

Fired up from the march, organizers found a way to keep the march alive. The first National Coming Out Day was celebrated on Oct. 11, 1988.

The goal of the day is for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people and their allies to celebrate coming out and encourage those who haven’t to make their voices heard.

“It’s a day to be visible,” said Candace Gingrich-Jones, associate director of youth and campus outreach with the Human Rights Campaign.

“What we know today is people who know someone who is queer are much more likely to understand the issues of inequality and be supportive of the work to gain that equality,” she said..

Corpus Christi, a passion play by four-time Tony Award-winner Terrence McNally (Kiss of the Spider Woman, Master Class, Ragtime), depicts Jesus as a gay man, and ignited a firestorm of controversy upon its release in 1998. Lauded by worldwide critics since its humble beginnings in 2006, 108 Productions’ resounding success of CORPUS CHRISTI continued to sell-out audiences for months at Los Angeles’ Zephyr Theatre and went on to tour across America. In Europe, the play was an Amnesty International Freedom of Expression nominee at the 2007 Edinburgh Fringe Festival, and was awarded the Intercultural Dialogue Award at the International Dublin Gay Theatre Festival in 2008.

Following, the company celebrated the show’s 10th anniversary Off-Broadway at the Rattlestick Theatre, benefiting the Matthew Shepard Foundation and New York’s Gay Community Center. Deemed by the playwright as “the definitive production,” the show continued to tour nationally and internationally, while a documentary crew followed their travels to less tolerant communities.

Now, six years later, CORPUS CHRISTI: PLAYING WITH REDEMPTION will screen a Tampa Sneak Preview. In this feature documentary, anti-gay religious groups meet “the gay Jesus play.” The film follows the troupe, playwright, and audiences across the U.S. and around the world on a 5-year journey of Terrence McNally’s passion play, where voices of protest and support collide on one of the central issues facing the LGBT community – religion based bias. Challenging issues of civil rights, marriage equality and separation of church and state, this production has become a remarkable vehicle of positive change for a community struggling to find its voice. Meanwhile, the company of actors finds itself on a journey that would forever change their lives.

108 Productions will bring together these two events for a unique experience like no other: the “I AM Love” Campaign. The I AM Love Campaign’s mission is to ignite dialogue on religious bullying and homophobia, in all ages and walks of Life, by teaching self-empowerment through artistic endeavors, community collaboration, and educational outreach, through a nationwide tour of the combined play performance and film screening.

Keith Haring: Radiant Child

A Play by Jeff Norton

Saturday, December 1st, 7:30pm

freeFall Theatre, 6099 Central Ave. St. Petersburg

Suncoast AIDS Theatre Project commemorates World AIDS Day by presenting Keith Haring: Radiant Child, Saturday, December 1st, 2012, at freeFall Theatre in St. Petersburg. This one night only performance will benefit Metropolitan Charities of Pinellas, HIV/AIDS programs.

Keith Haring: Radiant Child, is a play written by actor/writer/teacher Jeff Norton, directed by Kerry Glamsch, and starring Chris Rutherford as Keith Haring. This amazing solo acting piece will inform and in some cases, introduce audiences to the artist’s creative process and work.

The play examines how the artist and his work emerged from the New York City graffiti street culture of the 1980s and gaining notoriety and tremendous commercial success as he began to reflect on more socio-political themes, such as Apartheid, AIDS, and the crack cocaine epidemic. Haring became friends with such luminaries as Madonna, Jean Michel Basquiat, and Andy Warhol.

In 1988, Haring was diagnosed with AIDS and established the Keith Haring Foundation, its mandate being to provide funding to AIDS organizations and children’s programs. Haring died February 16, 1990 of AIDS-related complications. Haring stated, “The greatest lesson that I’ve ever learned in my life was to realize that I can have an effect, that I can change things that maybe need to be changed.”

This one night only performance will benefit HIV/AIDS programs at Metropolitan Charities of Pinellas. Admission is $10.00.

Suncoast AIDS Theatre Project is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization whose mission is to raise awareness, provide assistance, and perpetuate a life of dignity for those affected and infected by HIV and AIDS.

Candidate for Ala. High Court Slams Marriage Rights, LGBT Equality
Roy Moore, the former chief justice of the Alabama Supreme Court and a candidate to regain the post, told a Tea Party rally that marriage rights for same-sex couples will cause “the ultimate destruction of our country.” “We can’t keep disparaging our military and promoting things like same-sex marriage, LGBT. To hear the president of the United States say that we are promoting LGBT. Let’s think about what that is: lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered rights,” Moore told the crowd. Moore was removed as chief justice in 2003 when he refused to comply with a court order banning a monument displaying the Ten Commandments in the state judicial building.
Record Number of Out Candidates Running For Congress
Nine openly gay, lesbian and bisexual candidates are major party nominees for Congress this year, a new record that could see the LGBT community with more of its own on Capitol Hill than ever before. The candidates say anti-gay politicking so far hasn’t been an issue in their races, and one openly gay Republican candidate says he’s been welcomed by party leaders. “As for issues of equality, you’ll never have true equality until you have advocates on both sides of the aisle,” said Richard Tisei, the GOP nominee for a House seat in Massachusetts. Two of the nine are incumbents seeking re-election to the House, while one incumbent House member, Rep. Tammy Baldwin, D-Wis., is seeking a Senate seat.

Make a double batch so you’ll be sure to have leftovers and store them in Ziploc bags in your freezer!

Subject: For Immediate Release: Romance Novelist Featured in Courageous Art Benefit

Tampa, Florida

Romance Novelist Featured in Courageous Art Benefit

Romance novelist Mackenzie Crown recently released her memoir on her battle with breast cancer. Mackenzie, her younger sister and her first cousin were all diagnosed with varying stages of breast cancer within two months of each other, devastating her family and bringing to the forefront the precious gift of this thing we call life. “Where Would You Like Your Nipple?”, a comedic survival guide of hope, is a light hearted embrace of a sobering subject. The author’s wit serves as salve for those who are taking the same frightful journey.

Mackenzie will be doing a book signing on Oct 13th in conjunction with The West Tampa Center for the Arts event “Pink”, a benefit for the local non-profit, Faces of Courage. In addition to the release of Mackenzie’s book, “Pink” will feature the female form celebrated by some of the bay area’s most renowned artists including Lisa Scholder, whose work has included body painting adornments on breast cancer survivors since 2009.

“Her work was a natural fit”, says Moira Shiver of Lisa’s work, “for both this art show and for the cover of Mackenzie’s book.” Moira is an art consultant and the Art Director for the WTCA and arranged for these two artists to meet and collaborate for the cover of Mackenzie’s book and for the breast cancer benefit “Pink”.

This event will also feature an art scavenger hunt, live “survivor” body art painting, book sales and a live art auction of donated works. Books are available for purchase for $10.00 at the event.

Henri Cartier-Bresson Exhibition at Tampa Museum of Art

Henri Cartier-Bresson

Please join us this Friday evening (Oct.5) for a members-only reception to kick off our 2012-13 special exhibition season with the U.S. premiere of The Man, The Image and the World: Henri Cartier-Bresson, A Retrospective.

“Saturday Night Gecko” Voted As 2013 Gecko Ball Theme

GULFPORT, FL: After four weeks of online public voting, organizers of the Fifth Annual Gecko Ball have announced that the overwhelming choice of voters for next year’s theme is “Saturday Night Gecko.” “Saturday Night Gecko” will evoke the 1970s disco era, including the music, dance moves, outfits, hair and fads of the 70s. Other themes up for consideration were “Gecko Rouge” (Cabaret) and “The Masked Gecko” (a Masquerade Ball), but “Saturday Night Gecko” was the voters choice by a landslide. August 24th will be the date of Gecko Ball 2013. The event gets larger and more popular each year, including costumes, over the top décor, cocktail specials, dinner buffet, silent auctions, and the popular live auction of geckos created by local artists. For more information and updates on the Gecko Ball, go to the facebook page at: www.facebook.com/geckoball.

The Gecko Ball occurs one week prior to the Gecko Fest street festival each year. The two events benefit a local cause or charity each year. Proceeds from 2012’s Gecko Ball, “Hooray for Geckowood!” and Gecko Fest will fund the creation and installation of public art in the Gulfport Waterfront District.

Did you know? Gulfport was named one of six national small-town finalists in the “Best For Food” category during the 2011 Rand McNally/USA Today Road Rally.

In conjunction with the Henri Cartier-Bresson exhibition, the Museum has joined forces with our sister institutions around the Bay area to celebrate local photographers. We asked nine partner agencies to recommend a photographer whose works best captured the spirit of Cartier-Bresson’s belief that a photograph can seize “life in a moment.”

Now that we have assembled one work by each of the nominees, The Tampa Bay Times has put the nominees online. Everyone in the community has the opportunity to vote on which work best represents the idea of life in a moment in Tampa Bay. We will even put the 10 works on view at the Museum during the run of the Cartier-Bresson exhibition.

Nominees are Zach Christopher, MK Foltz, Jennifer Greenwell, Timothy W. Kennedy, James Reiman, Ric Savid, Herb Snitzer, Joseph Walles, Carlton Ward Jr., and Nolan Gray Wiley.

Check out the nominees and their work at www.tampabay.com/lifeinamoment, which will be live later this week. And the winner will be announced later this month.

To See As Artists See: American

Paintings from The Phillips Collection

The Tampa Museum of Art is pleased to announce its spring 2013 special exhibition: To See As Artists See: American Paintings from the Phillips Collection on view from Feb. 2 through April 28, 2013.

To See as Artists See presents 105 paintings by 75 artists that trace the course of American painting from the 1850s through the 1960s. Artists included in the exhibition are Winslow Homer, James McNeill Whistler, Thomas Eakins, Childe Hassam, John Sloan, Rockwell Kent, Georgia O’Keeffe, Edward Hopper, Stuart Davis, Jacob Lawrence, Jackson Pollock, Clyfford Still and Mark Rothko. The exhibition takes its title from an oft-quoted line from Duncan Phillips’ own writing on art, “All of us can acquire eyes wherewith to see the world as artists see it, variously, selectively, intellectually or emotionally, in full possession of the latent capacity for seeing nature in pictures and pictures in nature.”

To See as Artists See is the first large-scale, traveling presentation of the Phillips’s celebrated collection of American art, chronicling the broad scope and richness of its holdings. The exhibition had its premiere in Museo d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea di Trento e Rovereto, Italy, then traveled to the Fundación MAPFRE, Madrid, Spain and National Art Center Tokyo, Japan. It has been shown at only two U.S. venues: The First Center for the Visual Arts, Nashville, Tenn. and the Amon Carter Museum of American Art, Fort Worth, Texas.

“Names, Names, Names!”

As the hip hop beat of the Pet Shop Boys swelled from the speakers, the runway show at last Friday’s third annual CITY event was full of designs from around the world. As models tempted us with what lies ahead for fall/winter 2012, the capacity crowd of
more than 400 enjoyed one of the hottest tickets in town.

Neiman Marcus assembled runway looks from their buyers’ newly stocked collections, Grand Events transformed the Museum into a glamorous spectacle, and Side Bern’s kept patrons wonderfully fed all night long. Barbara Keskiner, chair of the event, and her entire committee deserve a round of applause for making this year’s event fashionable, fun, and fruitful.
The proceeds from event support educational and exhibition programs at the Museum. The total raised is still being tallied and will be announced later this month.

Volunteer for the All Hallows Ball 2012

Hi Mark & Carrie!

How to help
Now that all the invitations have been received many of you have been writing in and asking how you can help ensure the success and continuation of the party. Casper has tears of joy in his eyes from the outpouring of offers to help. He says there are two specific ways you can help this year:

  • Help build decorations:
Your hosts are planning another spectacular party for you again this year. There are many decorations that have been designed to transform the Tampa Convention Center into our Small World! Your hosts will be busy on multiple weekends between now and the night of the party cutting, painting and assembling all the goodies. If you’re interested in volunteering to assist with the painting and assembly, you may sign up to do so by completing the volunteer form by Clicking Here.
  • Help the night of the party:
No costume? Then become a staff volunteer! Volunteers are needed the night of the party to help direct guests, ensure the escalators are kept clear, check tickets and assist with general crowd control. Shifts will be approximately 1 1/2 hours each. You will be provided with an official “All Hallows Masquerade Ball Volunteer” T-shirt which is yours to keep and wear the entire night of the party. Everyone will know that YOU helped out! If you think that you may enjoy helping in this capacity Casper says to Click Here! Some of your hosts were volunteers at first! Please respond no later than October 15th. But why not do it right now?!?

That’s all for now. Casper wishes everyone a fun and safe weekend! More to come soon.

Casper

*The Annual Tampa All Hallows Masquerade Ball is a private event arranged by the hosts for their friends and invited guests. It is not a commercial event.

Nunsense A-Men!

Music, Book and Lyrics by Dan Goggin
February 2013
Nunsense A-Men is basically the original “Nunsense” show with all of the characters being portrayed by male musical comedy performers. Think of it as “Mrs. Doubtfire enters the Convent.” Done totally seriously, this show is, to quote a critic, “no drag.” A whole new layer of comedy surfaces, when these nuns put on a talent show to raise money to bury the last four dead sisters after a culinary disaster.

Edges
Music and Lyrics by Justin Paul Lopez and Benj Pasek
April/May 2013
EDGES is not a traditional musical; it is an exciting show about four burgeoning adults asking classic coming-of-age questions. Written by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul–2007 Jonathan Larson Award Recipients–in their sophomore year at the University of Michigan, this contemporary song cycle carries an honest voice advocating introspection while maintaining wit and charm. The songs cover such universal issues as love, commitment, identity, and meaning. Characters deal with confronting emotions, escaping expectations, and deciphering complicated relationships.

Drood

Written by Rupert Holmes
August 2013
Drood is a musical based on the unfinished Charles Dickens novel The Mystery of Edwin Drood. This wildly warm-hearted theatrical experience kicks off when the Music Hall Royale (a hilariously loony Victorian musical troupe) “puts on” its flamboyant rendition of an unfinished Dickens mystery. The story itself deals with John Jasper, a Jekyll-and-Hyde choirmaster who is quite madly in love with his music student, the fair Miss Rosa Bud. Now, Miss Bud is, in turn, engaged to Jasper’s nephew, young Edwin Drood. Our title character disappears mysteriously one stormy Christmas Eve-but has Edwin Drood been murdered? And if so, then whodunnit?

Auditions for actors will be announced at a later date.

Please visit our website, and facebook page for up to the minute information!
Please feel free to forward this opportunity.

Dear supporters,

I’ve hijacked your usual Know It All for this one issue to tell you about an exciting initiative that the Museum is announcing this week. The program is called Tampa Museum of Art Gives Back. Watch your mailboxes and favorite media outlets for more details.

With your help, the Museum has always worked to bring the best in the visual arts to the citizens of and visitors to our region while at the same time removing as many barriers to access as possible. Here is a snapshot of what your support allows the Museum to offer each year:

Art on the House. Our galleries are open free of charge every Friday from 4 – 8 p.m. Last year, one-third of our visitors enjoyed our galleries for free.

Tours for Hillsborough County Students. Free, docent-led tours of Museum exhibitions to all Hillsborough County classrooms are a mainstay of our educational programming. We also offer bus transportation grants.
Art Spot. This free family drop-in program of hands-on art activities tied to current exhibitions takes place every Saturday at the Museum from 11 a.m.- 2 p.m.
Art Space. This is an opportunity for community organizations to bring at-risk populations to a safe environment that connects them with the visual arts. This year’s partners include the Spring of Tampa Bay, Prodigy at the University Center, Champions for Children and our newest partner — The Pace Center for Girls.
Title One School Project. We provide teacher training, bus transportation and all required supplies for Hillsborough County Public Title One school children. This interdisciplinary program encourages critical thinking skills and the ability to make historical and cultural connections.

Festivals. Museum educators participate in various community festivals in Hillsborough County and beyond throughout the year, including Gasparilla Festival of the Arts, The Big Draw in Tampa and Ruskin, Gasparilla Music Festival, Tampa Bay Black Heritage Festival and many school festivals.
Free Family Days. These celebrations of the arts on view in the galleries are held semi-annually.

Student Exhibitions. The Museum presents three to four K-12 student exhibitions and receptions annually.

Earlier this year, I sat down and tried to quantify what monetary value we might give to our efforts. The results surprised us. In 2011, the Museum offered more than $250,000 worth of free services to our community. This represents almost 10% of overall annual budget.

Our members, donors and corporate sponsors make all of this happen each year, and we could not be happier with our attempts to make what we do available to as many people as we can. Thank you for being a part of this amazing mission.

Yours truly,

Todd D. Smith

Flamingo Auto Group going to Bok Tower
9 am Saturday
Meet at the park at 11 am
September 15, 2012

The 205-ft. carillon tower–a National Historic Landmark-is among the finest
in the world. Its 60-bell carillon is set within a 205-foot tall Late Gothic
Revival tower designed by architect Milton B. Medary. The carillon delights
visitors with 30-minute concerts every day. Housed in a majestic marble and
coquina bell tower, the carillon at Bok Tower Gardens consists of 60 bronze
bells ranging in weight from 16 pounds to nearly 12 tons. It is one of four
carillons in Florida.

Whether you have just one hour or a full day, you’ll find so much to
experience here. Among these are the informal woodland gardens which contain
more than 1,000 plant types, which were designed as a meditative woodland
landscape and nature preserve. Paths meander through open spaces and
plantings to create tranquil resting spots with picturesque vistas of the
Tower and the Florida countryside.

The opening of The Full Monty

The show that I have talked about, prepared for (and dieted for) is FINALLY HERE! And…..it has been a labor of love. The Full Monty opens next Thursday, September 6, at the BEAUTIFUL Cuban Club on 15th and Palm in Ybor City and runs four performances 9/6,7 at 8pm and 9/8 at 2pm and 8pm. Tickets are $22. Thank you to all my closest business associates for your support. You have all been supportive, encouraging and patient! Many of you have sponsored ads in our program and helped in many ways. I know you are all probably sick of hearing about the show. But your support has meant a lot.

I was first attracted to the piece because it is a musical that deals with the male experience. It deals with issues of parenting, loss of a job, loss of intimacy, marriage, body issues to name a few. Seldom do you find a piece that deals with male empowerment. Further, it is a great piece for our economy! We have assembled a very talented cast and it truly is a show that will make you laugh, cry, and cheer as our six working class guys from Buffalo bear all but get back so much!

I would be so appreciative if you can come out and see the show. To purchase a ticket by credit card go to www.spanishlyrictheatre.tix.com or simply call 813-884-5154 to reserve your seat and pay at the door. There is a very nice lobby bar that will be open before the show and at intermission.

Thanks for supporting live theatre, me and Spanish Lyric Theatre/SLT productions – the non-profit for which I sit on the board. The Full Monty marks the opening of our 54th consecutive season!

See you at the Theatre!

Subj: PFLAG Tampa – Matthew Vines Video
Hi, PFLAGers-

At last week's meeting, we mentioned a YouTube video that has been
having a profound effect on some of our family members and friends.
As suggested at the meeting, we are forwarding a link to this video
to our email list for those of you who would like to view it yourselves.
It is long - just over an hour - but well worth the viewing.
Grab a cup of coffee or pop some popcorn, and get ready to be moved
and challenged by this incredible, and highly-likable, young man.
In our opinion, the end is the best, so even if it takes a few
viewing sessions, make sure you get all the way through. We'll post it again
on facebook, too, and would love to hear your reactions.

Metro Wellness & Community Centers Celebrate LGBT Center Awareness Day

Tampa BayMetro Wellness & Community Centers are joining with CenterLink: The Community of LGBT Centers to celebrate the annual LGBT Center Awareness Day. On Saturday, September 15th, the Metro Wellness & Community Centers will hold events at both locations across Tampa Bay (1315 E. 7th Avenue in Ybor City and 3251 3rd Avenue North in St. Petersburg) to showcase the many offerings of our local community centers.

“Every year we think it’s vital that people recognize the pivotal role LGBT centers play in our community,” said Terry Stone, CenterLink’s Executive Director. “Estimates of over 40,000 people visit centers each week and access programs and services that literally build community from the center. We have seen the effects on communities served by LGBT centers, including financial, health, wellness, and community organizing impacts, and we are excited to highlight that work through Center Awareness Day.”

The theme of this year’s LGBT Center Awareness Day is “Building Our Community From The Center,” showcasing the integral role that community centers play in the development, unification, and empowerment of all LGBT communities. Locally, the Metro Wellness & Community Centers provide social activities, classes, support groups, counseling, health and fitness programs, youth programs, substance abuse programs, mental health services, HIV/AIDS services and free HIV Testing.

LGBT Center Awareness Day also has a civil rights equality push on a national scope, with an organized effort for municipal, county, and state proclamations honoring the day and the work that LGBT centers do, as well as efforts to get individuals everywhere engaged in “personal awareness actions,” ranging from wearing a button to visiting a center.

Metro Wellness & Community Centers will be open to the public on Saturday, September 15th and visitors are encouraged to stop in, take a tour and learn about the many programs being offered. The St. Petersburg Center will be open 12 p.m. – 9 p.m. and will also host “Metro Unplugged” – a night of music featuring Leslie Kille, food and more from 7 to 9 p.m. A cash bar will also be vailable. The Tampa Center will be open 12 p.m. – 4 p.m., during which time the LGBT Youth Group will produce an art project to enhance the Community Center. Free HIV Testing will also be available at both locations. With the National LGBT Center Awareness Day in mind, Metro Wellness & Community Centers is launching its “We are Family” campaign which looks at how LGBT Community Centers are shaping our lives, encourages the community to get to know the Centers, experience the programs, classes and support services and help shape the future of its offerings.

“Our community centers are the heartbeat of the community,” says Chris Rudisill, the new Director of LGBT Community Center Services. “We are committed to serving all persons of the community and look forward to growing along with the local lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and straight communities to make our programs strong and supportive of the community’s needs. In addition, we serve as a welcoming hub of information and activity for the many visitors that come to the beautiful Tampa Bay area.”

Subject: A Stonewall Democrat’s Perspective
To: Carrie West <MCFILMFEST@gmail.com>

Yesterday, the Washington Blade’s Chris Johnson reported that the DNC Platform Drafting Committee, which included NSD founder Congressman Barney Frank, voted unaminously to approve a platform plank in support of the freedom to marry. This past weekend, during the Platform Drafting Committee’s public hearings, National Stonewall Democrats was among several organizations that offered testimony to the committee.

Aaron Zellhoefer, an LGBT delegate from Minneapolis, Minnesota, testified on behalf of NSD at the hearing. His testimony, which we’ve included below, is a powerful personal perspective that gets right to the heart of this debate. We hope you are as proud as we are to have been represented by someone with such passion and conviction.

The 2012 DNC convention is only one month away and we want to have a strong presence in Charlotte to engage the record number of LGBT delegates, like Aaron, expected to attend.

Please contribute today to our Stonewall Convention Fund and show your support.

Testimony before Democratic National Committee
Platform Drafting Committee
Minneapolis, Minnesota
July 28, 2012
Aaron Zellhoefer

Good morning Mr. Chairman, Governor Strickland.

Greetings, Members of the DNC Platform Drafting Committee and fellow Democrats.

My name is Aaron Zellhoefer and I am speaking on behalf of the National Stonewall Democrats, the national voice of LGBT Democrats, the largest LGBT organization working with the Democratic Party and working to elect Democrats across the country. I bring greetings from our Executive Director, Jerame Davis, our board, and local affiliates, LGBT Democratic clubs and caucuses from every state.

As a point of personal privilege, I would like to also take this opportunity to congratulate National Stonewall Democrats founder Congressman Barney Frank on his recent marriage to his long-time partner, Jim Ready. The entire Stonewall Democrats family wishes you both the happiness and fulfillment you both deserve.

We are here today to advocate for the passage of a plank that speaks specifically to full marriage equality in the national Democratic Party’s platform.

This is the Time

Some may think that this is a leap for our Party, that the Party is not ready, or that it may be politically unwise to do this now. We say that as LGBT individuals, we are ready for marriage, and over 70% of Democrats – including President Obama – now agree. Change never comes easily, absent risk, nor when it is most convenient. Please also consider that failure to act at this moment in history may be, at best, a lost opportunity, at worst, a serious political error. The strong step on behalf of civil rights that our party took in its platform in 1948 (at the urging and leadership of Minnesota’s own Hubert H. Humphrey) was a strong statement of the ideals that our Party stands for. Just as importantly, it forged a national Democratic coalition that serves us well to this day.

President Obama made history by becoming the first sitting President of the United States of America to be outspoken in support of the freedom to marry. His leadership for our Party and our nation has forever changed the dynamic of this conversation and has created the opportunity to once again stand on the right side of history and to strengthen our diverse national coalition. Young people today, of all stripes and persuasions, are searching for the political party they’ll call home. Let’s make sure we’re speaking to their ideals of inclusion, freedom and diversity.

Upholding Marriage

Some think that we as LGBT individuals want to change the definition of the word marriage. To the contrary, we are seeking to join marriage, not change it – to affirm the ideals of strong families that are built on love, commitment, responsibility – supported by friends, family and the larger community.

When women were finally afforded the right to vote, did we have to change the word, “vote”? When our schools were desegregated, did we redefine, “school” or “education”? When we allowed openly gay people to join the army, did we have to change the word, “army?”

The freedom to marry the person you love builds families, strengthens the institution of marriage, and moves us one step closer to realizing full equality for all Americans.

State Battles this Year

In Minnesota we will be voting this November on whether we should change our state constitution to permanently limit the freedom to marry. Your leadership on supporting marriage equality right now, this year, will send a strong message and will be a huge boost in our efforts to not be 31st state to have changed their state constitution to limit marriage to only opposite sex couples. Rather, we could become the first state to vote no and reject one of these hurtful and harmful amendments. Three other states, Washington, Maine and Maryland, are also facing ballot measures in defense of the freedom to marry. Let’s all say together, “The politics of division stop here and stop now. This Party – our Party – will not stand for it.”

Love – and Practicality

I love the idea of marriage equality for just that reason…Love. To be sure there are numerous practical matters, provisions in our laws that allow us to care for and protect our families – to carry out the activities of life with some measure of dignity and confidence. In the state of Minnesota alone, there are at least 515 laws to which committed LGBT couples have no access. An examination conducted by the GAO in the aftermath of the passage of DOMA revealed over 1,100 federal rights and protections from which gay couples are barred. These range from areas that affect our lives as fundamental and far ranging as end of life issues, health care, health crises, credit, taxes, inheritance, legal relationships, public services, raising children, property ownership, and so on.

Dreams and Aspirations

On April 20th of this year, I celebrated my 10th anniversary with the man I love, my partner Kevin. The next day, I was elected and given the honor to represent Minnesota as a national delegate to the Democratic National Convention this September in Charlotte. To say the least, it was an exciting and momentous weekend. As I was running to be a national delegate I promised to work hard to see our Party pass a plank in our platform to include marriage equality.

It is important for me to tell you how much this means to me on a personal level. My brother Adam is getting married to the woman he loves in September. It is very exciting and heartwarming to watch him planning for that day, but I’ll confess that I’m also a little envious. I can’t wait for the day that I can have the same opportunity. I can’t wait until the day that I’m able to get down on one knee, and not say, “Will you civil union me?” or “Will you domestic partnership me?” Rather I can’t wait until the day, where I’m able to go out for a romantic dinner, followed by a walk by one of Minneapolis’ beautiful lakes, with the stars twinkling above. I’m guessing that I will have butterflies in my stomach — that exhilarating feeling so hard to describe, and be able to get down on one knee and ask, “will you marry me?” – with the full knowledge of what that means – that we’ll be actually getting married in every sense of what that word means.

I can’t wait to call my mom and dad and tell them the good legal news. I can’t wait to call my brother and ask him to be my best man. I can’t wait to call my best friend Brian and tell him the good news. And I can’t wait for that special day that we all dream about for years. With all of our family and friends, Kevin and I will able to say, “I do,” to marriage.

Today, I ask you to say, “I do.” National Stonewall Democrats asks our fellow party members, to say, “I do,” — not to change marriage, but rather to include LGBT individuals in the full light of equal rights with the understanding that our right and freedom to marry the person we love builds lives of dignity and vitality.

I ask you to say, “I do,” to making my dreams – and the dreams of millions of gay and lesbian Americans – become reality.

Thank you for your time.
