2013 HARVEY MILK FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES LINEUP
The 4th Annual Harvey Milk Festival (HMF) will take place May 16-18th, 2013 in the historic downtown district of Sarasota, Florida. The mission of the Harvey Milk Festival is to honor the life of Harvey Milk, one of the first openly gay Americans elected to public office, by fostering emerging talent in musicians and artists who support diversity and reject discrimination, and to promote equality for LGBTQ people through supporting equal rights legislation.

Admission is free to all events with the exception of the HMF film component.

On May 16th, HMF/Film will host a screening of the documentary I Am Divine which follows the life story of John Waters’ drag queen protégée Divine, the late celebrated stage and screen performer. The film features interviews with Waters himself, along with Ricki Lake, Mink Stole and others.

On May 17th, HMF/Art will host The Equality Art Gallery exhibiting local and national artists at MillerBrady Fine Art Gallery.

On May 18th, HMF/Music will feature a stage at Five Points Park, featuring nine national and local musicians. Founder and HMF Board President Shannon Fortner believes this year’s musical lineup is particularly special due its diversity in genres, ranging from high-energy folk rock to catchy electro pop. “All of our performers believe in LGBTQ equality, creating a welcoming environment for everyone,” Fortner states.

The 2013 HMF headliner is French Horn Rebellion. Hailing from Milwaukee, Wisconsin the indie brother-duo have pioneered a new genre called ‘Next Jack Swing’ which mixes synth beats with funky bass lines. Garnering critical praise at 2013 SXSW, the band has toured with indie-pop heavyweights MGMT and Cut Copy. The Guardian states the duo makes ‘killer dance pop’ that sounds like “MGMT if they were to hook up with mustachioed disco producers from the 70s.”

Co-headliners include Clementine and The Galaxy, a NYC-based duo creating spacey art pop, gathering praise from The Huffington Post, Time Out New York and The Deli Magazine, which named the band one of the top emerging artists of 2013. Local Sarasota electro-pop quintet MeteorEYES will also co-headline.

Other musicians scheduled to appear include Good Graeff, Jen Rock and The Cry Babies, Bard and Mustache, Zulu Wave, Brazos the Rat and Waking Giants.

Art installations at Five Points Park will include an installation by Steve McAllister entitled The Labyrinth of the Unbroken Path.

Guest speakers include Michael Farmer, Field Coordinator/Gay/Straight Network Coordinator for Equality Florida and Tesla Gunderson, Also OUT Youth teen staff member.

The official after party for HMF/Music will be held at Throb Nightclub. The five-dollar cover will be donated to the festival for any attendee wearing an official HMF bracelet.

Call for Research Participants for Trans* Therapy Study

Hello! I was hoping that you would not mind distributing the call for research participants below. I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you!

My name is Stephanie Budge and I am currently working on a research project to study how therapy works for people who identify as trans*[1] or transgender. Participation in this study consists of taking part in online surveys that ask questions about identity (for example, gender labels), how therapy is going, and how you have been feeling lately. Participation in this study also involves filling out a demographic questionnaire. To qualify for the study, participants must be age 18 or over, identify as trans*, transgender, or have gone through a gender transition. In addition, participants must plan to start therapy within two months of enrolling in the study and plan to continue being in therapy for at least 16 weeks. Interested participants who do not meet these criteria (who are already involved in therapy, for example) are not eligible to participate. This study has been approved by the University of Louisville IRB.

Trans* or transgender participants will be asked to jointly participate in this study with their therapists. This process will be explained in detail to all who are interested in participating. All interested participants will be given a chance to ask questions about the study, are not obligated to participate in the study, and can discontinue participation at any point in the study with no penalty or loss of benefits to which they are entitled. All study participants and their therapists will be provided with monetary compensation for their time involved in study participation.

The information collected may or may not benefit you directly; however, you will have the opportunity to talk about your experience in therapy and how you feel it impacts your life. Some people may find this to be helpful. Additionally, the information learned in this study may be helpful to others in identifying psychotherapeutic processes and outcomes as they may relate to improving psychological training or therapy processes.

If you are interested in being a part of this study, or if you have any questions, please contact Stephanie Budge at stephanie.budge@louisville.edu or louisvilletransgenderresearch@gmail.com or by phone at (502) 852-0627.

Thank you,

Nude Nite Art Event in Ybor
Contact: Kelly Stevens 321-229-8110 Kelly@nudenite.com
Peace, Love and Nude Art at Nude Nite Art Event
Exposing Art and Artists for 14 years
TAMPA, FL — Nude Nite, the largest nude art show in the U.S., opens its doors March 7th for its annual 3-evening exhibition of art and entertainment. Nude Nite exhibits over 200 original works in a 25,000 SF pop-up gallery setting allowing thousands of art enthusiasts to view and purchase artist’s works. The juried show has gained a national reputation for giving the nude a confident standing in the art world.
The 2013 show transforms an industrial warehouse into its signature gallery taking inspiration from Mother Earth herself. “The body is universal, regardless of its shape, size or color,” director Kelly Stevens says. “We are too judgmental of our bodies. It feels good to compliment and appreciate ourselves just as we were created to be.” Guests will experience a rainbow of colors cast upon a canopy of white transparent umbrellas giving a rain forest-like effect. Projection artists will create a 20 foot high 3D light mapping sculpture inspired by global views of the figure.
Guests can expect a diverse group of installation artists which include Japanese artist Miyuki, making edible sexy candy figures in the Ame Zaiku style, and Chef Tiberio Simone of La Figa: Visions of Food and Form (www.LaFigaProject.com), a coffee table book that features a spectacular collection of sensual photography –models wearing nothing but Simone’s edible creations. “La Figa examines the relationship between food, touch and the ingredients that make life delicious,” said Simone. It’s a unique hybrid of fine art photography and food. In anticipation of its opening, Nude Nite has introduced 8 videos on You Tube and Nude Nite’s Facebook page of individuals, artists and performers who have been touched by the acceptance they feel by attending the show.
Nude Nite will host its first male “boylesque” performer from Chicago’s The Stage Door Johnnies. Ray Gunn WILL take it off for the ladies (and gentlement). Guest can expect Nude Nite’s saucy burlesque shows at the “top” of every hour beginning at 9pm, 10pm and 11pm and stage performer, Perego will showcase his mind blowing rock ‘n roll art performance at 8pm. In addition, expect to be entertained by world class body painters, aerialists, fitness pole dancers and the unusual cast of strolling characters around every corner.
The upcoming 2013 shows are held in Tampa March 7, 8, and 9 at an industrial warehouse 3606 E. 4th Ave. Tampa, FL 33605 (Outside Ybor) from 6pm – midnight. 21 and over only. Valet and self parking available. ATM on site. A full bar will be available with quality wines. Sunday’s in Ybor will be providing gourmet cheese plates and heavier meal options all for purchase. Tickets are available online through the website or at the door for $20. For more information visit www.nudenite.com. Facebook:

** Note to Writers and Editors: Please pay special attention to the correct spelling of the event (Nite, not night and not plural) as spell check will auto-change this.

STAGEWORKS PRESENTS STAGED READING OF COMPETITION WINNER

Bellini and the Sultan: A Comedy in Istanbul

Explores Relations Between the West and the Islamic World

WHERE: Stageworks Theatre in Channel District, Grand Central at Kennedy, 1120 E. Kennedy Blvd. Tampa FL 33602
WHEN: Tuesday, March 19, 7:00 PM
TICKETS WILL BE SOLD AT THE DOOR: $5.00; $3.00 students, seniors and military
Stageworks Theatre presents the Florida premiere production in a staged reading format of Bellini and the Sultan: A Comedy in Istanbul by local playwright Ed Stevens, one of the 2013 winners of Stageworks’ Breaking New Ground Playwrights Competition. The Competition is part of Stageworks’ landmark program to encourage and nurture new works of theater, which includes Stagewrights, the company’s longstanding bi-monthly playwriting workshop and its highly successful TampaWorks evening of plays about the Tampa Bay area.

“It is only by providing encouragement and opportunities for new plays that we can ensure the survival and growth of theatre as a vital art form,” explained Stageworks Founder and Producing Artistic Director Anna Brennen. “We are proud and excited to present the work of local and developing playwrights, who represent the future of theatre.”

Bellini is a unique adventure-comedy that depicts how Muslims and non-Muslims can communicate and understand one another’s cultures, in the context of an exciting entertainment experience. In the play, Renaissance painter Gentile Bellini is sent to paint a famous portrait of the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire. Since Islam forbids personal images, he finds himself fighting to survive in exotic 15th Century Istanbul in the midst of eunuchs, concubines, romance, executions and an evil Vizier out to get him.

ABOUT THE PLAYWRIGHT: Stagewrights member Ed Stevens received the Kennedy Center’s 2005 David Mark Cohen Playwriting Award for his play After, a post-9/11 story. Ed’s work has been produced in New York City, Provincetown, St. Petersburg and San Diego and has received honors at the George R. Kernodle Playwriting Contest, Attic Theatre’s One Act Marathon, Kennedy Center Ten-Minute Play Competition, Last Frontier Theatre Conference, Association for Theatre in Higher Education, Actors Theatre New Works Festival, American Theatre Co-op, Valencia Character Company, Orlando-UCF Shakespeare Festival, Hidden River Arts Playwriting Award, Ashland New Plays Festival and Bay Area Playwrights Festival.

ABOUT THE CAST: Bellini and the Sultan will be performed by a cast of eight professional actors from the Tampa Bay area: Tom Costello, Rick Stutzel,Joshua Goff, Graham Jones, Rick Kastel, Jake Fryer, Marlene Peralta and Farrah Zad.

Ben Affleck’s Next Project: Dennis Lehane’s “Live By Night”

Author Dennis Lehane and his Boston homeboy Ben Affleck are teaming up again, this time for a film version of Lehane’s most recent novel, Live By Night. Affleck made his first major splash as a director by adapting Lehane’s novel Gone Baby Gone for the screen in 2007. Affleck has said Live By Night is his next project, which reportedly means he will write, produce, direct and star in the film.

There are a couple of strong local tie-ins. Lehane has been a Writer in Residence at Eckerd Colle for several years (he’s also a graduate). The author is part of the school’s Writers in Paradise 2013 conference, which concludes today, along with Ann Patchett (Bel Canto, State of Wonder) and Daniel Woodrell (Winter’s Bone), among other scribes.

A major portion of Live By Night takes place in Tampa, mostly Ybor City. The period piece, set amid 1920s Prohibition, revolves around rising criminal Joe Coughlin.

It will be interesting to see how much Affleck features Tampa, and whether he actually shoots in Ybor City. The novel is broken into two locales: Massachusetts, where Couglin starts his career in crime and does a prison stint; and Tampa, where he is sent to revive a syndicate’s control of the rum trade and other illegal activities.

There has been no word about casting—although it’s a fair guess that Affleck will play Coughlin (he’d fit)—and nothing about a shooting schedule.

GetEQUAL FL

Hello!

It was great chatting with you in your store the other day. I wanted to share with you details of our upcoming events, starting with our Valentine’s Day Request Marriage action where we are asking couples to join us in at the County Courthouse to request marriage licenses. We should have press there and will be talking with them about the injustice of inequality, including issues faced by binational couples.

https://www.facebook.com/events/488820511154993/

And on to our bigger event. Here is some information on the vigil we will be having. This one is far enough in the future that we have plenty of time to plan and get the word out. Our first planning meeting will be held soon, and info will be posted on the event page below. If either of you would like to speak at the vigil, please let me know.

Light the Way to Justice in Tampa Bay!

https://www.facebook.com/events/149948405161229/

When: March 26, 6:30pm

Where: Sam M. Gibbons US Courthouse, 801 North Florida Avenue, Tampa, FL

What: Candlelight vigil in solidarity with LGBT people across the nation

Why: On March 26th & 27, 2013 the Supreme Court of the United States of America (SCOTUS) will be listening to oral arguments on the constitutionality of The Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). DOMA states that marriage is between one man and one woman, but now it is our time to show the depth of equality and justice for all. Help us plan, organize and take action by bearing witness to OUR right to the pursuit of happiness. Celebrate this historic event and take action – organize, NOW! If you would like to be part of history, be on the steps of YOUR LOCAL FEDERAL COURTHOUSE, at any time during this 48 hour span. We need a presence on the steps of the SCOTUS AND each Federal courthouse or building in each state in this great Nation. Choose a leader to lead this locally and DO IT!!! This is not a march, a fight or a demonstration – this is a peaceful show of solidarity, a stand for LOVE, not hate. Make signs to hold, bring candles and help show our desire to be equal. History is in the making and it is time to bring America into the 21st century. Let’s give people hope and create change by using the voice of the people. Call on our veterans, back to the days of MLK, Harvey Milk, Cesar Chavez, Alice Paul and many other allies and advocates who have fought to create change through action – this is a grassroots movement. Will you join us?

Onward!

Hillsborough Community College Ybor Art Gallery presents

ROCKY BRIDGES – Mixed Media Assemblage

January 7-30, 2013

Reception – Thursday, January 17 4:30-7:30pm

Artist’s Presentation 6:30

Bridges constructions are carefully composed meditations on the transience of functional, manufactured items from our contemporary material culture. The original design and function of objects and their eventual discarding becomes a metaphor for the evolving relationship of man and his environment. He attempts to express the power of positive thought through the use of color and various combinations of materials. The objects find a heightened level as they are redefined into new aesthetic roles. Rocky currently teaches are the Harrison School for the Arts in Lakeland.
