Dear Friends of GLSEN Tampa Bay,

We are writing to bring attention and support to students in our community who plan to participate in the national Day of Silence.  The Day of Silence (www.dayofsilence.org) is one of the largest annual student-led actions in the country.  This student activity aims to silently and peacefully protest anti-lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) bullying, harassment, and name calling.   Because students who are targeted for anti-gay bullying often do not identify as LGBT, the Day of Silence represents a peaceful protest of a problem that affects all students no matter their sexual orientation or gender identity.

On Friday, April 11th 2014, thousands of student across the state will vow to take a form of silence to call attention to the silencing effect that students experience who are victims of anti-LGBT bullying and violence. The Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network (GLSEN) of Tampa Bay offers support to students and educator efforts throughout the year, and during specific days of action such as the Day of Silence, in order to promote students’ safety, respect, and support at school.   The Day of Silence is an opportunity for students to take the initiative to teach one another about diversity, respect, and safety for all students. Students gain leadership skills, provide a valuable service to the school community and empower themselves by realizing their ability to be engaged in making a difference in their school.

Students who participate in the Day of Silence do so in a way that does not disrupt the educational process: on the contrary; these efforts are designed to enhance education for all by making schools a safer place to be.  Typically, on the Day of Silence, rather than speaking, participants hand out “speaking cards” explaining their reasons for remaining silent throughout the day. There are numerous ways in which Day of Silence participants can meet their academic responsibilities without speaking. With the support of teachers, students could lead or take part in a “silent lesson” or complete a written assignment.

When every student is safe from bullying and violence, the whole community will benefit. Please join us in supporting this cause by announcing the upcoming Day of Silence to the colleagues, peers, and leaders in your schools or community. A version of this letter has already been shared with School Boards, Superintendents, and Teacher Union leaders to help highlight the Day of Silence.  For additional reasons why a Day of Silence is important to anti-bullying efforts, please see our attached research brief on school climate in Florida. To learn more about the Day of Silence, including ideas for participation, please visit www.dayofsilence.org.

Sincerely,

Frank H. Roder, M.Ed  & Troy Loker, Ph.D.
Co-Chairs, GLSEN Tampa Bay

Room Service staged reading to benefit StageworksA nimble-witted producer, living on credit with several actors in a Broadway hotel, is desperately in need of a good script. He finds one, and, by great good luck, he also finds an angel with $15,000. The play shows how, during a hectic few days, the producer plays hide-and-seek with the angel who wants to withdraw his financial support, manages to outwit creditors, and at the very last moments puts over his play in spite of the most ludicrous and unexpected obstacles. “This play, produced by George Abbott, is one of the great comedy successes of all times.

Staring Contest App

What if Salvador Dalí created an app? How could the app capture contradictory conditions between the real and the subconscious? Our new Staring Contest app does just that by turning a two-person game into a digital one that gives users only the illusion of having an actual opponent.

Pick your battle against Dalí himself and other felicitous characters, such as a proxy for Andy Warhol, in celebration of the launch of our new Warhol exhibit.

The app is free and available for download in the App Store.

Theatre of Tampa’s musical production of You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown by Clark Gesner. You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown is a day in the life of Charlie Brown, featuring other lovable characters like Lucy, Schroeder, Linus, Sally and, of course, Snoopy. Clark Gesner, who wrote the music and lyrics for this 1967 musical comedy, said it best, “None of the cast is actually six years old. And they don’t really look like Charles Schulz’ “Peanuts” cartoon characters. But this doesn’t seem to make that much difference once we are into the play, because what they are saying to each other is with the openness of that early childhood time, and the obvious fact is that they are all really quite fond of each other”

Director Tony Gilkinson, along with Assistant Director Caitlin Greene and Music Director Deborah D. Lynch, have put together an amazing cast starring Dakota Ty Hardin as Charlie Brown. Joining Dakota is a veteran from m.a.d. Theatre’s 2012 sold-out run of Avenue Q, Melissa Doell, as his younger sister Sally Brown; Lisa Stanforth as Charlie Brown’s nemesis Lucy Van Pelt; Matt Bravo as lovable Snoopy; Zachary Sutton as the young and wise Linus; and Miguel Marin as the Beethoven-loving Schroeder.

2014 HOMELESS COUNT
IN HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 27, 2014

The 2014 Homeless Count in Hillsborough County, which will take place on Thursday, February 27, 2014, is a one-day, statistically reliable, unduplicated count of sheltered and unsheltered homeless individuals and families in the country.   It serves to measure the needs of the homeless population in our community as well as provide direction for future development of housing and services.

The Homeless count will be conducted on the streets, locations where homeless individuals can be found, and at service provider locations in every city and unincorporated area in Hillsborough County.

We are seeking volunteers to join others who are committed to ending homelessness to assist in conducting the count on February 27, 2014.

Will you help us count?
