Grand Opening of Area’s First LGBT Welcome Center
(St. Petersburg, FL) December 10, 2014 – Tampa Bay’s LGBT Welcome Center will celebrate its Grand Opening Reception on Friday, December 12, 2014. After being moved a block down Central Avenue and undergoing a year’s worth of renovations, the historic Grand Central District bungalow is ready to serve the LGBT community living in and visiting Tampa Bay. The Welcome Center is located at 2227 Central Avenue, St. Petersburg, FL 33713.
The Grand Opening Reception will include a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 6:15pm featuring Lorraine Langlois, CEO of Metro Wellness & Community Centers – Tampa Bay’s LGBT Community Center, of which the LGBT Welcome Center is a project – along with St. Pete Mayor Rick Kriseman and community leader Brian Longstreth, who helped bring the project to fruition.
The general public is invited to attend the celebratory reception starting at 6:00pm, which follows the VIP reception hour for donors of the project at 5:00pm. Tampa Bay’s “Best Cabaret Act” (Creative Loafing’s Best of the Bay), Scott Daniel and Matthew McGee of The Scott and Patti Show will host the event. The Welcome Center is the second of its kind in Florida, providing an inviting community space for residents and visitors to participate in enriching programs and events, get connected to area things to do and places to stay, and enjoy local Kawha coffee in a safe and inviting space. The Welcome Center also houses office space for the Grand Central District Association.
Metro Wellness and Community Centers currently has offices and LGBT Community Centers in St. Petersburg (3251 3rd Avenue North), Ybor City and New Port Richey in addition to its Thrift & Gift retail store on Central Avenue, located right next to the Welcome Center. Metro has been providing premier HIV services, social networking and other health and wellness programs for over 21 years to the four-county area of Pinellas, Hillsborough, Pasco and Hernando.

A Message From Our Founder

“In the spring of 2002, I was attending a meeting at the home of the Executive Director of Crescendo: The Tampa Bay Women’s Chorus, and I asked what might be the possibility of Crescendo fostering the development of a brother chorus. The response was immediately positive, and the next few weeks flew by as The Men of Crescendo was born. Several months afterwards, we became Una Voce: The Florida Men’s Chorale, and our first concert – the holiday show “Unwrapped” – was a sold-out success.

Over the years, Una Voce has given me so many cherished memories – stepping onto the stage at Carnegie Hall, joining voices with the talented young people at the Pinellas County Center for the Arts at Gibbs High School, providing music for countless events such as Tampa Pride, St. Pete Pride, Pasco Pride, City of Tampa holiday celebration, Tampa International Gay and Lesbian Film Festival, and various other functions. Of course, I could never forget the many, many Tampa Bay Buccaneer games, where I and my fellow singers worked very hard to earn money for the chorus.

Serving as the founding president of Una Voce is one of the proudest accomplishments in my life, and it is only fitting that through my work with Una Voce I met my husband, Dakota Ty Hardin. Singing together in the holiday concert of 2006, we met one evening for coffee afterwards and have been together ever since. Dakota and I thank Una Voce for introducing us, and our Una Voce brothers in song were in our hearts, when we were married in Victoria, British Columbia, August 7, 2010.”

As we approach the exciting day created to assist not-for-profit organizations that has been designated internationally as “Giving Tuesday” on December 2nd, I ask that you dig deep into your hearts and pockets and provide the men of Una Voce with the support to continue the amazing work throughout the Tampa Bay area and beyond…that the mission statement so perfectly states:  To celebrate the inherent dignity of all people through excellence in men’s choral music!  We appreciate your contribution, support, and love of music!
Thank You,
D J Holt, Jr.

Photo of the Week
Mayor Bob Buckhorn
Mayor Buckhorn joins Intown/Framework and their team to break ground on a new luxury high-rise on Harbour Island.

“From the Desk of Mayor Buckhorn” is designed to give citizens greater insight into the Mayor’s Office. Every week, Mayor Buckhorn will offer a snippet of what he’s currently working on.

“There are only so many announcements that we get to make that we know will change a city. Today, there’s a new development being announced that will transform the historic Kress Building. As Jeff Vinik and his team reshape and activate southern downtown, this project along with the new residential development along the Grant block will do the same for northern downtown.”

11/4: Tampa Bay Business Journal: Putting the ‘work’ in live work play: Tampa office deals boost revitalization efforts – Downtown Tampa’s available office vacancy rate has fallen to 14%, a record low.

11/5: Tampa Bay Times: Work starts on 21-story Harbour Island apartment tower – Last week, Mayor Buckhorn joined Intown/Framework, the group developing a new 21-story, luxury apartment tower on Harbour Island. The project is just one of two new residential high-rises slated to be built on Harbour Island.

11/6: Tampa Bay Times: Carlton: Mayor Buckhorn for governor? Stranger things have happened – Mayor Buckhorn would tell you that being mayor is the best job in the world, but if he continues to make progress in Tampa, it might make sense to take the same approach to Tallahassee.

11/6: Tampa Tribune: Concerns over booze abuse don’t thwart Riverwalk vote – Last week, Tampa City Council approved the creation of a Specialty Center along the Tampa Riverwalk, which will allow locals and visitors to carry alcoholic beverages with them. The proposal mirrored similar, successful initiatives undertaken in other cities along their waterfronts.

11/7: Tampa Bay Times: Editorial: Medical school makes sense for downtown Tampa – USF’s move to bring their medical school downtown could be at both the “apex of academic medicine and economic development” for Tampa region.

Benefit at Jobsite Theater for Ybor Youth Clinic

Hello all,

I wanted to remind you of an upcoming fundraiser to benefit the Ybor Youth Clinic!

We all remember last year when Jobsite Theater dedicated their production of Hedwig and the Angry Inch to the YYC.  We received $10 from the sale of each ticket and generated $1,000 to support our cause, while having a great night out!  Well, they’re at it again this November and I invite all of you to join us for their November 7th performance of “Vampire Lesbians of Sodom.”

One of the longest running plays in Off-Broadway history, Vampire Lesbians of Sodom tells the saga of two fatally seductive vampiresses, a virgin sacrifice (Coco & Homo’s Zachary Hines) and her maker (veteran Jobsiteer Summer Bohnenkamp), whose paths first collide in ancient Sodom. Their bitter rivalry endures for nearly two thousand years with stops along the way in 1920’s silent movie Hollywood and contemporary Las Vegas. Moving between histrionics of classic horror cinema and the cheerful nastiness of the backstage melodrama of manners All About Eve, Vampire Lesbians sparkles with spectacle, homage and double entendre.

Jobsite’s production of Vampire Lesbians of Sodom features live music and burlesque/cabaret-style interludes under the music direction of J. Elijah Cho. Expect unique takes on traditional and contemporary song and dance, and a range of exotically silly acts that could range from fire-breathing to a chair dance.

“Busch makes it very clear that this was never meant to be performed as a traditional play but as a burlesque,” offers director David M. Jenkins. “We’re already putting together a list of possible songs and crazy skills the cast has so that as soon as we begin rehearsals we can play as an ensemble and see what shakes out.”

Some of Jobsite’s most successful and memorable productions have been focused around Halloween – from last year’s Macbeth to the monochromatic musical Gorey Stories to Clive Barker’s History of the Devil. Fans of last year’s season opener, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, will certainly not want to miss this drag-tastic romp of a burlesque that also features Spencer Meyers, who played Hedwig, as a vampire hunter hot on the heels of our heroines.

Una Voce Notes
October 2014

Tuesday, December 2, 2014

Hi Friends!

Each year, we have some special days in the fall that we have all come to expect and enjoy.  We have a day for giving thanks…so cleverly named “Thanksgiving!”  We have a crazy day in the retail industry called “Black Friday” when we get to cash in on some amazing deals in stores and businesses throughout the country.  Then there’s “Cyber Monday” … the day when we can go online and get tremendous bargains by purchasing through vendors websites and online businesses.  Now, we can add a very extraordinary and selfless day to our list of events…”Giving Tuesday,” a global day dedicated to giving back. On Tuesday, December 2, 2014, charities, families, businesses, community centers, and students around the world will come together for one common purpose: to celebrate generosity and to give.

Una Voce is a non-profit organization in the Tampa Bay area community founded in July of 2002.  The men’s chorus has the following mission: “We celebrate the inherent dignity of all people through excellence in men’s choral music!”

Has Una Voce been a cherished organization of yours?  Has our music been enjoyed by you, your family, friends, and peers?  We strive to continue our mission in bringing the community joy through song and we are looking to you on Giving Tuesday to help us continue with this mission.

Join us and be a part of a global celebration of a new tradition of generosity.  This Giving Tuesday, December 2nd, 2014, will you help us continue our excellence through song?  In the upcoming weeks, there will be examples of how Una Voce has impacted the lives of both participants in the chorus and the audiences attending the chorus’s celebrated performances.  Please keep Una Voce in your hearts and minds on Giving Tuesday following the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.

Cheers!

A stunning comedy about the redemptive power of friendship

Superior Donuts getting rave reviews!!!!!Rave reviews for Stageworks’ production of Superior Donuts, now through October 26.

A stellar cast leads us through an extraordinary journey, in this stunning new comedy from the Tony and Pulitzer Prize-winning author of August: Osage County.

Jim Wicker makes you cry, Richard Coppinger makes you laugh, and Blake High senior Travis Brown makes you sizzle with an electrifying performance that everyone is talking about.

This play takes every stereotype you know, and turns them upside down. You’ll root for timid police officer Roxanne Fay, her Trekkie partner Joshua Goff, and the wild homeless woman portrayed by Dawn Truax. Peter Konowicz and Michael Mekus are eerily compelling gangsters, and Tim Guerierri surprises as a guy who’s not your standard Russian goon. Letts’ provocative comedy turns up the heat on the challenges of embracing the past and the redemptive power of friendship.

Una Voce
Notes
October 2014

Greetings to you and yours!

I hope you spent a delightful summer getting together with family and friends.  The sweltering Tampa heat has not discouraged Una Voce from looking ahead to our Holiday 2014 concert, entitled Broadway Lights, Holiday Nights!  We’ve been preparing all summer, selecting music and writing the script, so that things were in place when our rehearsals started up again in August.  Singing, “Let It Snow” when it’s 95 degrees in the shade is certainly a little confusing, but that’s Florida!

After the run of the Broadway Lights, Holiday Nights performances, Una Voce will be saying good-bye to Artistic Director Justin Havard, I am sad to report.  The decision to leave the Chorale was Justin’s to make; we wish him the very best in his future musical endeavors.

Una Voce recently updated its mission statement to proudly declare: We Celebrate the Inherent Dignity of All People through Excellence in Men’s Choral Music. To that end, the Chorale welcomes talented, passionate individuals with creative vision and the leadership skills necessary to bring those visions to the stage to apply.

It was performed in the first annual New York Music Theater Festival in 2004 before making its off-Broadway debut on September 27, 2005.
