“From the Desk of Mayor Buckhorn” is designed to give citizens greater insight into the Mayor’s Office. Every week, Mayor Buckhorn will offer a snippet of what he’s currently working on.

“Our story as a city is that we did not choose over the last four years to just recover from the recession, but that as we recovered, we found a new path to greater unity and promise. Just as a city’s work is never done, our story is not finished, and together, we will define our future.”

3/30: Tampa Bay Times: Editorial: Big plans, big ambition for Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn – In the past four years, Tampa has changed – with a rebounding, new jobs, and sense of buzz about our community. For Mayor Buckhorn, the next four years are filled with even bigger plans.

4/1: Tampa Tribune: Tampa mayor Buckhorn, council sworn in for second terms – Tampa came together to celebrate at the Oath of Office Ceremony for Mayor Bob Buckhorn and Tampa City Council.

4/1: Saint Petersblog: In ambitious speech, Bob Buckhorn hints at bigger things for Tampa — and himself – In his speech at the Oath of Office Ceremony, Mayor Buckhorn weaved together Tampa’s story over the past four years, from struggling through the recession to defining our own path to success and financial stability.

4/1: Tampa Bay Business Journal: Buckhorn: TECO Line Streetcar, regional transit a priority for second term – Providing better transportation options is a top priority for the next four years for Mayor Buckhorn, and the streetcar will play a big role.

4/2: Tampa Tribune: Buckhorn uses NCAA event to join growing backlash against Indy law – As Tampa hosts the Women’s Final Four event this week, Mayor Buckhorn took a stand with the NCAA and with equality advocates across the country that the Indiana law is wrong and discriminatory.

4/5: Bay News 9: Changes being considered for Tampa’s trolley service – As a priority for his next four years, Mayor Buckhorn is looking at ways to expand and modernize the streetcar, to transform it into a viable and sustainable transportation option.

Winners won hand-crafted plaques created by Ybor Market Vendor, Sarita Paccine, $600 in cash prizes, judge space for 2016 and best of all, bragging rights!

Contestants all hoping to earn the title of BEST FLAN 2015, competed in the Flan Cook-Off Contest at the Ybor City Saturday Market’s 12th Annual Flan Fest on Saturday, February 28.

With smiles on their faces and stories in their hearts, contestants shared their special ingredients (some top secret) with the judges.  It was quickly discovered that they all shared one common ingredient, a dash of family heritage. Recipes have been shared through the generations, some dating back to Great, Great, Grandmothers.  Many continue to prepare the original recipe while others have added their own special touch.
Flans representing nearly every culture and ranging in flavors from traditional to guava to coconut made it a tough job for the judges to choose their favorite creamy dessert.  Winners were selected in two categories, traditional and non-traditional and were judged on both taste and presentation.

The Ybor City Saturday Market would like to thank all the volunteers, sponsors, entertainers, contestants, judges, City of Tampa, YES Team, Ybor City Saturday Market Vendors and Board Members for another year of SWEEEETTT SUCCESS!  Til next year…..

Written by David Nehls and Betsy Kelso, this two-act musical comedy explores the relationships between the tenants of the Armadillo Acres Trailer Park in Starke, Florida, particularly between Pippi, the ‘stripper on the run,’ the Dr. Phil loving, agoraphobic Jeannie, and Jeannie’s tollbooth collector husband, Norbert. It was performed in the first annual New York Theatre Festival in 2004 before making its off-Broadway debut on September 27, 2005.

CAST OF CHARACTERS:
5 Women / 2 Men

Jeannie Garstecki – (Belt and Mezzo)

Jeannie has lived in a trailer at Armadillo Acres for 20 years with her husband and high-school sweetheart, Norbert. A faded beauty, she was 17 when she married, 18 when her son was born and 23 when he got kidnapped. That, coupled with a really bad perm, has turned her into an agoraphobic. She hasn’t left her trailer in all these years, and the man she loves is drifting further and further away and she’s determined to get him back…that is if she could manage to get out of the trailer to do it…
Norbert Garstecki – (High Baritone)

Jeannie’s husband Norbert collects tolls for a living and tries to be as good a husband as one can be to an agoraphobic. A former high-school football star, any good looks he may have had when younger, are now marred by fatigue and the stress of his difficult marriage. He is a simple man who desperately wishes his wife could get out of the trailer, but he’s not equipped with the emotional or intellectual tools to help her do it. He has never loved or slept with another woman other than Jeannie. That is until he meets…

Pippi – (Big Belt)

Up to this point, Pippi’s life has been about surviving. She is a professional stripper who has gotten by on her looks and talents for dancing and petty theft. She means no harm and is ready to stop making bad choices and start making changes, but first she has to get lost in a hick-town trailer park in North Florida so she won’t be found by her last bad choice…

Duke – (Rock Tenor)

Duke is Pippi’s obsessive, possessive and excessive Magic-Marker sniffing boyfriend; ex-boyfriend according to Pippi. Not so, according to Duke. Not the brightest guy south of the Mason-Dixon Line, Duke leaves a trail of disaster in his wake wherever he goes. His road trip to Starke is no exception and his arrival at the trailer park is full of surprises- even for a group of people who have had their share of excitement…

Betty – (Rough Belt)

Betty attended high school with Norbert and Jeannie Garstecki and has lived at Armadillo Acres for just as long. She now runs the leasing office and makes it her business to know everything about everybody who passes through the trailer park. Though a self-proclaimed bad-ass, Betty is really a mother hen to the denizens of the trailer park. Of all “The Girls,” Betty is the most grounded, earthy and dry.

Linoleum aka Lin – (Belt)

So named because her mother gave birth to her on the kitchen floor, Linoleum has a husband on death row at the Florida State Prison. His fate is the electric chair that doesn’t work properly unless most of the town’s electricity is turned off. So Lin watches everyone’s lights and appliances very closely in the hopes that she can keep the chair on the fritz. Sometimes self-absorbed and sometimes just a smart-ass, she hints at a wild, rock-and-roll past and is the fieriest of “The Girls.”
Donna aka Pickles – (Belt)

A newlywed, Donna is called “Pickles” because she is perpetually hysterically pregnant- that is, she is so convinced she should be pregnant she’s exhibiting symptoms. Her husband is a lot fancier than she is, as he is from the big city of Jacksonville. His parents haven’t been very supportive of his marital choice, so Pickles is desperate to give her husband a family of his own – even if she has to fake it. The dimmest of ‘The Girls,” Pickles is airy, sweet and blissfully ignorant.

PLEASE NOTE:
This show is a comedy but has ADULT LANGUAGE & DARK HUMOR. If you are shy and/or have genteel sensibilities, this is probably not the show for which you should audition.

Tails at Twilight – Saturday, February 28

GULFPORT, FL: The Get Rescued evening celebration, Tails at Twilight, is a popular component of a full day of festivities that begin with Gulfport’s Get Rescued, the beloved annual street festival and fundraiser held on Beach Blvd. on the same day.  Later in the evening, after the pets have gone to bed, all are invited to a lively evening of fun for humans that will also donate to the important cause of animal rescues.  The evening will include fun music and dancing, catered hors d’oeuvre, a cash bar, and festive décor will add to the party atmosphere.  Opportunity drawings will take place during the evening.  Proceeds from ticket sales, after expenses, will be donated to rescue groups participating in the evening event. Live and silent auctions will offer a chance to support participating non-profit rescue groups with a variety of auction items up for bids including travel, hotel stays, art, wine and food, pet accessories, restaurant gift certificates, an African Safari and much more.  Rescue groups solicit their own items and will receive 100% of proceeds from their auctions.  Tickets for the Get Rescued Evening Celebration are a $25 donation.  Advance tickets are recommended, however, a limited number of tickets may be available at the door on Saturday, February 28 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Gulfport Casino Ballroom, 5500 Shore Blvd. South.  For more information on Tails at Twilight, or to purchase advance tickets, please visit www.GulfportMA or contact Lynda Shehan at (727) 323-3892 or No1Ringmaster@aol.com.

TECO Line Streetcar System Offers Warm Welcome to Cruise Ship Visitors

Tampa’s TECO Line Streetcar System began service three hours earlier last Wednesday to serve the more than 1,200 tourists voyaging aboard the German cruise ship AIDAVITA. The special service, authorized by the Tampa Historic Streetcar, Inc. (THS) board president, was made as part of TECO and the Hillsborough Area Regional Transit Authority’s ongoing commitment to creating dynamic partnerships with the communities it serves and the businesses within those neighborhoods.

As a result of the extended hours TECO Streetcar ridership soared by nearly 300 percent, to 1710 passenger trips.  Thus far in FY2015, Wednesdays have averaged 575 passenger trips.

TECO Streetcars offered a chance to experience the rich history of the city by riding the same kind of transportation that fueled Tampa’s early growth and prosperity. Businesses along the streetcar line welcomed the visitors by opening earlier to extend warm Tampa hospitality and diverse shopping and dining opportunities.

The AIDAVITA has more cruise stops scheduled in Tampa over the next few months, on January 28, February 18, March 11, and April 1. The TECO Streetcar line will evaluate the success of the extended morning hours for future service offerings.

Rent, winner of the Tony award for Best Musical and Pulitzer Prize for Drama, is an inspiring rock musical with music and lyrics by Jonathan Larson and is loosely based on Giacomo Puccini’s opera, La bohème. Adapted as a motion picture in 2005, the musical tells the story of a group of impoverished young artists struggling with sexuality, drugs, life, rent, and most of all, love in New York City’s East Village during the thriving days of Bohemian Alphabet City, under the shadow of HIV/AIDS. Our production features music direction by Peter Belk and Kyle Goyens and direction by 2014 Broadway World Tampa Best Director nominee, Anthony Paul Gilkinson.
