CDC Awards Metro with Funding to Support HIV Prevention

For Immediate Release:

(St. Petersburg, FL) July 1, 2015 – Today, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has announced that it has awarded Metro Wellness & Community Centers with $350,000 over 5 years in new funding to provide HIV High Impact prevention. This funding is part of the CDC’s $216 million project to reduce the rates of infection in the hardest-hit areas of the United States.

Florida currently ranks first in the nation for newly diagnosed HIV cases, and third in the nation for newly diagnosed AIDS cases. Hillsborough County ranks first in the state with newly diagnosed HIV cases and Pinellas County as seventh. “The epidemic in our area is alarming especially for those under 29 yrs of age. Through Metro’s HIV testing alone in the month of June there were 10 new positive persons identified,” said Lorraine Langlois, CEO.

The CDC adds to current funding from the Florida Department of Health for increased prevention education for positives and high risk negative programming. “This type of programming helps us increase awareness and health among those who have been diagnosed with HIV, and hopefully reducing the transmission of HIV. This funding is perfect timing with our new primary care clinic which will offer PrEP treatment among other LGBTQ services.” say Priya Rajkumar, VP.  This is the first time in years that a community based organization in Tampa Bay has received direct funding from the CDC for HIV prevention. Metro is one of only three grantees in Florida to receive funding.

Some additional services provided through the funding includes couples counseling, increased treatment adherence education and ensuring access to Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) for individuals at high risk of infection. Metro just recently announced the opening of LGBTQ Primary Care Clinics which will provide these increased services to help stop the spread of HIV in our communities.

TAMPA BAY’S AMALIE ARENA RANKED AS A TOP STOP

TAMPA, FL – AMALIE Arena in Tampa, Florida was recently ranked fifth in the world by Venues Today magazine. The rankings are based on worldwide ticket sales for concerts, events and family shows in venues seating 15,001 or more from March 16 – April 15, 2015.

  1. The 02 Arena – London
  2. Bridgestone Arena – Nashville

  6. Staples Center, Los Angeles
  7. Philips Arena – Atlanta
  8. Olympic Stadium – Montreal
  9. Sam Boyd Stadium – Las Vegas
  10. Ethias Arena – Hasselt, Belgium

“We were very proud to host such a strong run of events in March and April of 2015, welcoming many notable acts including: the world famous Harlem Globetrotters, Eric Church, the NCAA’s Women’s Final Four, The Who with special guests, 2015 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees Joan Jett & The Blackhearts and 98ROCKFEST. That’s only the beginning, there are more great events in the coming months,” said Elmer Straub, Vice President of Event Booking for Amalie Arena.

Amalie Arena recently hosted a sold-out RUSH concert (Sunday, May 24) and is welcoming other notable artists this summer including “the King of Bachata” Romeo Santos on June 19, Charlie Wilson with KEM and Joe on June 20, Imagine Dragons on July 10, Ariana Grande on July 16, Sam Smith on July 21, Cirque du Soleil presents “Varekai” August 4-9, WWE Raw on August 31 and more!

Venues Today is a leading international trade publication that has covered the business side of entertainment and sports, particularly as it relates to venues. Its readers include managers, owners, operators and bookers of arenas, amphitheaters, stadiums, performing arts centers, convention centers, fairgrounds and equestrian centers.

AMALIE Arena/Tampa Bay Sports and Entertainment, LLC:

Tampa Bay Sports and Entertainment, LLC is an entity established by Jeff Vinik in March, 2010 to manage the National Hockey’s League’s Tampa Bay Lightning, the Arena Football League’s Tampa Bay Storm and the leasehold rights to Amalie Arena, the 19,204-seat downtown Tampa home in which the teams play their games. The venue opened in 1996 and was named the Ice Palace at the time, but it became Amalie Arena in September, 2014 when the family-owned, Tampa Bay-based AMALIE Oil Company elected to partner with Vinik and Tampa Bay Sports and Entertainment. Since Vinik’s purchase in 2010, he has led a complete brand and business transformation of the Lightning, the Storm and the arena which was anchored by a mostly private $60+ million dollar renovation of the publicly owned facility.

Over the past several years, the vibrant rainbow flags that line the Grand Central District every June have worn out (& stolen) and need to be replaced.
We need your help to keep this going! Please consider a donation to help restore these flags along Central Ave in St Pete.
