USF’s New Morsani College of Medicine & Heart Institute Starts Constr.
USF Bull flags were flying high in the air in the newly named Tampa Water Street District. The location is right across the street from the Amalie Arena and the Channelside District. The 50 acres of prime downtown development had Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn and local politicians, USF President Judy Genshaft, USF medical and administrative staff, TB Lightning owner Jeff Vinik and real estate developers and happy residents claiming a new historical day in Tampa. The long awaited new USF’s Morsani College of Medicine & Heart Institute had the big equipment operators salivating to start and complete the huge redevelopment in 2 years.
The present USF Medical College is located on the main USF campus 12 miles north of Tampa. The new facility will be closer to Tampa General Hospital a partnership with USF Health, where a lot of on hands residency research & medical work takes place. Already in downtown Tampa is the USF Center for Advanced Learning and Stimulation.
History, in 1971 the USF Medical School opened. Two years later the USF Nursing School opened.
Tampa should be proud to be the established medical facility, medical research and health center in the country. Tampa will no longer be the same!

Hall on Franklin (Great Eats) on North Franklin Street
Tampa Heights just North of downtown Tampa is just really starting to gear up for an explosion of new identities. Ulele’s Restaurant opened on the Tampa River Walk and in the prime of all the action. The old Tampa Streetcar Building and Armature Works Building are being renovated and will see new destined restaurants opening with in months.
The booming area and buildings sprouting include many large apartment developments in the building phase, a new hotel, and many new office buildings. TECO streetcar have plans of expanding to this new growing Tampa district.
What was known to many of us for decades was Chamber’s Night Club, a neighborhood Tampa Gay Bar and club on Franklin Street where Teacup bartended, has opened and transitioned to a Euro type style combination of markets under 1 roof, now called Hall on Franklin. This is like an upscale urban foody eatery open market with 5 different restaurant choices in 1 location. The open air window garage doors, chandeliers, furniture, flooring are all gorgeous.
We ventured into the great needed style of restaurant in the urban plan. The first thing we noticed was the absence of the glass stage & stairs to the 2nd floor. The creative openness of couches, group sitting areas, workable computer tables and conversation areas, distinctive open kitchens all bright and trendy. This is going to be hot! In fact it is Hot!!!
The many menus in one offer the variety and you only need to order through your server. The independent market restaurants include;
Poke Rose – a sea/field to table of fresh ingredients in a traditional Hawaiian raw seafood salad.
Babe’n Babes – authentic Belgium waffles, sweets, cookies, asst’d cakes and variety of yummy ice cream.
Heights Fish Camp – All about seafood, oysters, sandwiches and tantalizing appetizers for a kickoff with friends or a lunchtime getway.
KOFE- Your choice of regular coffees, espressos and variety of the in teas.
Heights Melt Shop – Your getaway for Breakfast anytime/ all day.
North Star Eatery – Asian Fusion and rice bowls,Vietnamese cuisine
Collection – Friendly Mixologists hand crafting your new at the moment drink or regular drink experience.
Located at 1701 North Franklin Street. Open daily 11am -10pm during week and 1am closing on weekends.
Bon Appetite!

Dear HCC and Ybor City Campus Community Partners and Friends:
Thank you for your past support of Hillsborough Community College, the Ybor City Campus, and me in our efforts to better the lives of thousands of students and their families each year. Your guidance and attention have been invaluable.
With that, I invite you to attend our next Ybor City Campus Community Forum on Thursday, October 5th at 11:45 a.m. in the Ybor Room. Lunch will be provided. The Ybor Room is in the Ybor Building at the corner of 14th Street and 9th Avenue. Parking is available in all HCC lots and the Student Garage at Palm Avenue and Nuccio Parkway.
We will have updates on our enrollment, our legislative initiatives, and new programs. Additionally, we will have some student presentations and networking opportunities. There will be ample time for questions and answers as well as a tour of the Campus where you will get to meet some of our instructors and students in action.
As a partner and friend of HCC and the Ybor City Campus, you are invited to participate in the Community Forum and are recognized as a member of my Campus President’s Community Advisory Council. The Council is designed to enhance open dialogue between the campus administration and the community-at-large and will focus on how the campus can support the community and how the community can support the campus.
Please RSVP to my assistant, Bridget Harris, by Friday, September 29th. She can be reached at 813-253-7754 or bharris@hccfl.edu. Everyone is welcome, so if you have colleagues or friends who would benefit from attending, please invite them as well.
I hope to see you on October 5th.
Thank you for your support of HCC and the Ybor City Campus.
