In 1997 the then owners, Joey Livingston & the late John Moore, were at MC Film shopping for Lucy memoribila for their new North of Tampa campground, Sawmill Campground. MC Film was invited the first year to come up on the weekends to sell rainbow pride things in the party building. The next year the Suncoast Resort opened and WOW where has the time since gone to??? The Sawmill Campground is a founding member of the GaYBOR District Coalition in 2007. The bond & friendship between GaYBOR District & Sawmill have been very supportive & strong. Two different GLBT venues yet compatible entertainment areas. Then, last year Sawmill was sold again. This time to GLBT resident owners forming a non profit residential co-op. Who would have thought 15 years later we would be saying “Happy 1st Anniversary “ & Welcome RuPaul to the Sawmill!! Viva La GaYBOR!!!

New Bar… Liquid Lounge is moving at least 12? but 1 huge difference, there address is now on 7th Ave. The old BlueShark has totally been redone. The new openness of light through the front windows allow you to see downtown Tampa’s tallest buildings and skyscape. What a great transformation. Glass tiles, zebra wood and metal walls make the new Liquid…liquid! Owners, Manny Alvarez and Mike M. have moved their small 15th Street bar to a 2 story dance club. New added shot bars are on the 2nd floor and an added bar in the front bar area with a wrap around bar rail. A soft opening was last Saturday night during the Sant Yago Knight Parade. It was packed! A real big Grand Opening is set for mid March before the Roughrider’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade.on March 17th.

Once beginners in the art of glass masters they have ventured into making stain glass windows, sand etching glass and blowing glass. She is a very strong advocate to area history, local preservation groups and safety concerns in Ybor City. A founding member of the GaYBOR District and is a nurse by trade. Diane is very involved with the her grandchildren, their Pennsylvania farm and the many properties she owns and manages.

David Karst has been a long time friend and is also one of the founding members of GaYBOR District Coalition. David is the Director of Suncoast Project, a part of AIDS Services Association Pinellas (ASAP). This weekend is AIDS Walk St. Petersburg 2011, one of many projects that help finance ASAP services and keeping the community informed and educated. On a monthly Saturday night the ASAP mobile unit would be parked in Czar parking lot with FREE HIV Testing. The mobile unit will returning soon David has told us. Always helpful and pleasant to work with. Country music and country men are David’s favorites!
Michael is the co-owner of The Liquid Lounge in GaYBOR. An active member of the GaYBOR District Coalition, Michael’s positive energy & can do spirit has created a fantastic Happy Hour in GaYBOR. Don Barco is the owner of “King Corona Cigars” in Ybor City. He was also a founding member of the GaYBOR District Coalition! King Corona is our favorite place for Cuban cafe’ con leche’ & town gossip! Don and his wife, Brenda had a small cigar shop in the old Ybor Square Cigar Factory for many years before moving to the 7th Ave shop. Involved in all Ybor City boards and local city politics, most all political candidates have a forum or event at King Corona. Many of our small GaYBOR meetings are also held here in this friendly welcoming environment. With a large outside cafe patio, you can enjoy people watching while in the great outdoors. When the Hillsborough County Commissioners did not sign the GaYBOR Proclamation, Don was one of the first to stand up and say that’s not right!

The GaYBOR Easter Bar Hop
The Easter Bonnets for the Big Annual GaYBOR Easter Bonnet Bar Hop were adorned with eggs, lace, flowers, bunnies and ham?? As the large number of unique Easter chapeaus frocked upon colorful and eager bar crawling participants heads, the traditional event began with Reservoir Mama at the realm! The big charity fundraiser had people of all ages having fun and new friendships formed. A big contest for the winners included nights stays at the Hampton Inn & Suites, variety of restaurant and bar tab gift certificates and MC FILM gift certificates. Colorful spring bouquet Guards secured the street crossings.
The many Ybor bunny stop hop started at JJ’s Cafe, then Gaspar’s Grotto for some pirate punch, dance mix shot at the T-Dance at Barbarellas with special guest and star in Sordid Lives singer Jason Dottley. An artful stop with smiling Niely at Collage, across the street to see Bonnie & Tom the Crowbar, then a cold frosted beverage up at Centro Canteena, to the Hamburger Mary’s stop. A break then to Reservoir, pizza at NY, NY, onto Bradley’s on7th, a walk to see the Bricks and back to the new Liquid Tampa for a spectacular show with Intl known artist, Power Infiniti,Arica Love and a cast of many. A finishing off drink was on the rooftop at Rise at Tabu. Thank you to everyone who helped make this event such a success. MORE PHOTOS BELOW

Good & Bad News, first the bad.There is sad news from Centro Ybor this week. The Blue Dog Bistro closed their doors, forever. Franja is a good friend to the community. Good Luck! Who do you think will take their place??? Now some Good News. Carne, a new Ybor Chop House opens this week in the old Olivier’s Bistro on 7th Ave.. R-Bar is also ready to open their doors soon! Congratulations to Mama who has left the Reservoir Bar and is now the new Bar Manager at Hamburger Mary’s. GaYBOR T-Dance @ Barbarella’s has become the talk of Tampa Bay!!!! Every week the crowds have been growing as they discover the fun of partying in the Sun. Did you know that The Metro Wellness & Community Center is the 6st Largest LGBTA Community Center in North America? There are many new programs there. There has been a lot of talk about the anti protest zone for the upcoming RNC this summer in Tampa. It includes all of GaYBOR/Ybor City. You will not be allowed to enter with a squirt gun or any axes but guns will be allowed? Many LGBT Republican have already been scouting out locations too. This past weekend RuPaul entertained the 1000 guests at Sawmill Campgrounds for their first anniversary. This Easter Sunday there will be an Easter Egg decorating contest at Bradley’s on 7th. Can you say Rhinestone Faberge Eggs??? The Laughing cat Restaurant will be open at 4pm for Easter Sunday Dinner. Their outside sidewalk cafe will be opening soon!!! Letter to WATERMARK MAGAZINE
The letter below was posted on Facebook by Esme Russell. In response to an article about Hamburger Mary’s Tampa.
Good morning .. Last night I was handed a copy of the watermark issue with the Article on HBM … I was not surprised that you decided to print this article .. I was surprised that you got a few things wrong as did ABC news and that you never contacted anyone from Mary’s for a statement .. I was there , I work there I would have gladly informed you correctly .. What should have been good information turned into tabloid sensationalism . . Why don’t you write an article about all the money Mary raises for charity every week ? Or the work we do to bridge the LGBT community with the straight community thru our service and food and entertainment .. Why not write about our shows or our hugely successful Drag brunch ? You decided to spotlight one moment in our 2 year history .. And you completely missed the point .. Our Restaurant is very clean and we wouldn’t be opened if it wasn’t and the work we do and the pride we take in that work deserves attention as well . I know you need attention as well to circulate your paper ., but we are members of this community and we deserved a lot more respect that you gave .. Next time you sit down to write about us ..
