A new (possibly gay) bar is opening in the old Laughing Cat Restaurant Banquet room. Right across the street in the old Roosevelt is a new restaurant & bar opening by the owners of Cigar Brewing Company it will be called Cigar City Cider and Mead.  https://www.facebook.com/CigarCityCider The message is up on the last major cigar company in Historic Ybor City and America’s oldest family operated cigar maker. The JC Newman Cigar Factory with the fabulous clock tower along I-4 has its message flying “don’t close us down.” The FDA may put the nail in the coffin of the only surviving cigar maker that is left in Tampa on August 8th. GaYBOR Freedom Crawl
    It was a hot and rainy weekend but the GaYBOR District Coalition had its 6th Annual GaYBOR “Freedom” Bar Crawl that attracted the locals and many visiting out of towners. Headed up by the Mistress GaYBOR Mama they tramped thru showing colors at 8 bars and clubs in Ybor City. Adult Samplings stops included Hamburger Mary’s, Ybor City Wine Bar, Tequilla’s, Dog Bullocks, Reservoir Bar, Bradley’s on 7th, Liquid Lounge and G. Bar.
    The GaYBOR Officers want to “Thank” all the bar owners and staff for a successful & fun event.
    This annual event is a summer fundraiser is sponsored by GaYBOR in Historic Ybor City in the GaYBOR District. The weekend had many GLBT visitors from out of the area exploring GaYBOR!
    The next GaYBOR sponsored bar crawl is Labor Day weekend.

    The monthly GaYBOR District Coalition Meeting is set for Thursday, July 10th at 6 pm at Hilton Gardens Inn on 9th Ave in Ybor City. New items are on the agenda concerning Historic Ybor City and other community events.

Hillsborough GLBTA Have Candidates Night
    Candidates running for Florida State House District 61 candidates are going to have a chance to address the Hillsborough County GLBTA Democratic Caucus political organization Wednesday at 7PM at JJ’s Cafe in Historic Ybor. It will be a great opportunity to hear from the candidates and their opinions and stance on many GLBT issues including the Same-Sex ruling that is going on in the courts in Miami.

    The Summer Democratic GLBTA Caucus is set for July 18 -20 in Melbourne , FL.

   Lawyers Argue for Repeal of Florida’s Same-Sex Marriage Ban

(from Reuters) – Lawyers representing a half dozen same-sex couples suing Miami-Dade County for the right to marry say Florida should follow the precedent set by the U.S. Supreme Court in a decision last year that struck down parts of the Defense of Marriage Act.

“There have been an unbroken line of decisions since (then) that hold that prohibiting same-sex marriage is constitutionally impermissible,” said Jeffrey Michael Cohen, an attorney for the couples with the law firm Carlton Fields Jorden Burt.

A Miami-Dade circuit judge will hear oral arguments on Wednesday from a team of attorneys representing the couples and gay rights groups, Equality Florida Institute and the National Center for Lesbian Rights, seeking to strike down the state’s de facto ban on gay marriage and order it to recognize same-sex marriages.

Since the Supreme Court’s decision last year federal courts in Utah, Ohio, Oklahoma, Kentucky, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia have all ruled in favor of same-sex couples’ right to marry.

Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi last week said she would defend the state’s constitutional ban as the issue heats up politically with an election on the horizon.

State Republican leaders find themselves at odds with a growing chorus of Democrats and local officials.

Former Florida governor and Democratic gubernatorial candidate Charlie Crist reversed his position on same-sex marriage and filed a brief last week in support of the plaintiffs, arguing that “our society has evolved and moved past the prejudices rooted in our past.”

The cities of Miami Beach and Orlando also expressed their support in court filings.

The attorney general’s office in early June argued against the suit, citing the 2008 election when voters defined marriage between as solely man and a woman.

Bondi and Florida Governor Rick Scott, both Republicans, have downplayed their personal views on gay marriage, even as they appeal to conservatives eager to keep Florida’s marriage laws intact.
