The New Must See Movie
We just saw the movie “The Butler” I think we just found a new best favorite movie! Thinking back my very first favorite was “The Wizard of Oz” it was so Gay! (We just went to the limited release of the new 3-D version and it is the BEST EVER!!!) Then I fell in love with “The Rocky Horror Picture Show”. We dressed and went over 100’s times!!!
On one of our first dates with Carrie we went and saw the french film, “La Cage Aux Folles”. part 2 & 3 were favorites too. Then came Bette Midler in “The Rose”. Who can forget the line “HIT Ouiser” in Steel Magnolias. We fell back in love with Brad Pitt in “Seven Years in Tibet”.
Every time Carrie drives the car he says, “Driving Miss Daisy!” Now comes a new favorite “The Butler” Many parts of it correctly describe what it’s also like growing up LGBT. Especially how older people remember what it was like. Sadly, what it really still is like to.
Once you see the film you will understand what “THE FACE” is. How very true today. If you do only one thing this weekend go & see “the Butler” http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1327773/
Out & About Places
This week we went out to the former historic Fort Homer Hesterly Armory on Howard Ave. where the future Tampa Jewish Community Center & Federation South Campus is preparing for major renovations and expansion. It has a great structural history building rich in celebrity, musician, NWA wrestling matches, weddings, school graduations and National Presidential event.
Some of the many performing groups included half-naked Jim Morrison & The Doors, REO Speedwagon, Blue Oyster Cult, Pink Floyd, Nat King Cole, legendary Slim Whitman and infamous ‘King of Rock & Roll’, Elvis Presley sang at the armory 5 times! Not withstanding in Nov.1963, 4 days before being assassinated, President John F. Kennedy gave the keynote address at the Florida Chamber of Commerce Convention. The late Rev Martin Luther King had also given a speech at the magnificent historic military building.
The former Florida State Armory was re-named and dedicated Ft Homer Hesterly Armory the day after Pearl Harbor in 1941. Hesterly was another famed military officer and businessman from Tampa. The Florida National Guard & U.S. Army Reserves units relocated from this esteem military fort in 2004.
The Jewish Community Center is starting a $16 mil capital campaign in early 2014. In the works for the renovated art deco building is a portion leased by City of Tampa for an Arts & Visual Arts Center replacing the old Hyde Park Art Studios. Also a collaboration with USF and Tampa General Hospital are planning a 5,000 s/f Medical & Wellness Center. New additions will include an outdoor aquatic center, fitness center and new restaurant with plenty of parking.
The newly renovated center has a proposed opening date in mid 2015.
