Indiana Launches Gay License Plate

Indiana has launched a gay licence plate complete with rainbow logo aimed at young drivers. The state’s Bureau of Motor Vehicles had originally turned down an application for the plate from the Indiana Youth Group, a gay, lesbian and transgender group for people aged 12 to 21. They claimed it did not have statewide appeal and said the group could not ensure profits from the sale of plates would not be used for salaries.

Gay “Honor Killing” Movie Shakes Turkey Up

On a hot summer’s day in 2008, 26-year-old physics student Ahmet Yildiz was shot dead when he popped out from his Istanbul apartment to buy ice cream. The main suspect in the killing, a fugitive still wanted by Turkish police, is Yildiz’s father, who could not accept that his only son was in a homosexual relationship. The case, widely believed to be Turkey’s first gay “honor killing”, has inspired a movie “Zenne”, which opened on January 13 and explores gay sexual identity and prejudice in overwhelmingly Muslim Turkey. UK Muslims Convicted in Landmark Gay Hatred Case

Three British Muslim men were found guilty on Friday of stirring up hatred by distributing leaflets calling for the death of homosexuals in what prosecutors said was a landmark case. The men, from Derby, had posted and handed out pamphlets near their local mosque with the title “Death Penalty?” featuring a mannequin hanging from a noose and saying gay people would to go to hell. The leaflets were part of a protest by a group of Muslim men against a forthcoming Gay Pride parade in the city.

ON The Docket

Hey Carrie – I wanted to share a link to my show last week that the community would find useful… I tackled subjects of teens/violence and the bullying epidemic with USF Criminology Professor Dr. Kathleen Heide.  In the context of  bullying I focused on the Tyler Clementi case from New Jersey and a 15 year old girl who threw herself in front of a bus on Staten Island last week.  Dr. Heide and I covered many issues about how teens can cope with coming out and parents can do the same, how gay teens can deal with bullying and the responsibility that needs to fall on our schools to curb the problem.  Her full interview starts at 12 minutes in.   We are also moving into our new HD studios in Ybor in the next two weeks, so I would love to have you come back on our show when your available.  Hope to see you soon!
