Tampa City Hall Turns 100 Years
Tampa City Clerk, Shirley Fox-Knowles was sprucing up pictures of the Old historic Tampa City Hall this week. Her office is on the 3rd floor of the dignified honored building along with the Tampa Council Chambers. After all it is the 100 Birthday and 100’s of old hidden city hall pictures were stored away and had to be placed for the public celebration. The celebration kickoff is July 15th with a celebration honoring Tampa’s multi level cake style city building by architect, Leo Elliot. The actual 100 birthday is coming August 15th coinciding with the city’s 128th birthday.. There will be a lot off media coverage for the National Register of Historic Buildings centennial birthday. The public is invited to take in the city’s governing structure.
There is also some great news that comes along with being 100! Tampa officials will give the historic Tampa City Hall a $7.3 million dollar renovation coming from the city’s capital budget for 2016. Outside exteriors will be re- fortified first with brickwork being repaired on the first phase and new exterior doors. The interior will be started in the phase 2 building repairs. The contract will be officially confirmed by Tampa City Council. The City Council hold chamber meetings and members have their offices in the old 1915 city center.
Already, the new hurricane proof windows have been installed in the 8 story landmark structure a few years ago to the new Florida hurricane standards. The four faced tower clock was recently repaired and restored by a benefactor. A new roof was completed in 2014. Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn’s office is adjacent in the Tampa City Municipal Office Building high rise.
The mayor remarked that the city’s historic governing landmark building is deserving of all the investment renovations. Mayor Buckhorn was a Tampa Councilman with his office in the old city hall.
Yes, I had the great opportunity to be on the city board of the Barrio Latino Commission and sat for 4 years in the city’s upper chambers that held monthly public meetings.
