Our Town Conversation – Bill Maxwell
Thursday, September 26, 2013
6:30 PM – 7:45 PM

Our Town is a once-a-month conversation with people who are engaged in significant issues and topics in “our town.” The program is held in a conversation format, hosted by Dr. Carol Mickett, a philosopher and artist, who explores the life, projects, and engagements of the guests. The program has included such notables as Jyotika Virmani, Associate Director for the Florida Institute of Oceanography, Eric Deggans of the Tampa Bay Times, Chef Tom Pritchard, and technology entrepreneur Marvin Scaff.

About Our Guest: Florida native Bill Maxwell of the Tampa Bay Times has amassed a long and varied career as a journalist and educator. After serving in the U.S. Marine Corps, Maxwell began teaching English in 1973 at Kennedy-King College in Chicago and continued teaching for 18 years. In the mid-1980s Maxwell became an investigative reporter for the Fort Pierce Tribune, focusing on labor and migrant-farm worker affairs. He later began writing a weekly column for the Gainesville Sun and New York Times syndicate before joining the Tampa Bay Times in 1994. In 2004 he left the Times to teach journalism and establish a program at Stillman College in Alabama, before returning to the editorial board in August 2006.

NEW EXHIBIT: Print is the New Black: Dalí Printmaker
Now through January 2014

“Print is the New Black: Dalí Printmaker” explores the narratives that print conveys – in a way no other medium can – and showcases Dalí’s expertise and inventiveness as an image-maker. We celebrate here his fine and varied technique in illustrations for subjects including Alice in Wonderland, Les Chants de Maldoror and Don Quixote, illustrating Dalí’s inventiveness along with his fine draftsmanship. The exhibit, which opened on Sept 20th, is curated by The Dalí Museum’s senior curator Joan Kropf.
