Design in Context
Contemplate the fascinating history of chair design during the Museum’s featured summer exhibition, A Hundred Years – A Hundred Chairs. Masterworks from the Vitra Design Museum, on display May 19 through September 16, 2012.
Assembled from the expansive holdings of one of the world’s foremost design museums, this exhibition reveals aesthetic, technological and manufacturing concerns expressed through the design of the most ubiquitous of objects, the chair.
This intimate view showcases chairs by designers such as Charles Eames, Marcel Breuer, Eero Saarinen, Harry Bertoia, Verner Panton, Frank Gehry and many others working in materials such as wood, steel, plastic and foam. Assorted materials belonging to the Vitra Design Museum accompany chairs on display, and seven films reveal manufacturing processes, offering general insight into production techniques.
Generous support for this exhibition was provided by the Frankle Family Foundation. Corporate sponsorship was provided by Gerdau. Media sponsorship provided by Tampa Bay Times.
Please join the Museum in celebrating artists who pushed boundaries and elevated design to a key element of daily life.
Summer Art Camp 2012 is rapidly approaching, and spots are filling up fast. Camp sessions, each lasting one week, begin June 18 and feature hands-on studies of painting and drawing principles, experimentations with mixed media, collaborative group projects, and historical perspectives on master and contemporary artists.
Registration is already more than half full, but there is still availability for children ages 9-14. Sign up your child now to enjoy an artful summer!
We are also looking for summer art camp volunteers. Volunteers must be at least 16 years old. This is a perfect way for high school students to fulfill community service hours in a fun, creative environment.
Want to lend a hand? Please email Michelle Moseley, Museum Educator, for a volunteer application.
The Museum warmly welcomes a new face this month, as Dorea Ann Ferris joins as the new director of development in early May.
Ferris most recently served as director of development for the College of Arts and Sciences at American University in Washington, D.C., working with alumni and donors to raise meaningful annual and planned gifts. Prior to that, she was director of planned giving for the National Academy of Science and Associate Director of Development for the College of Engineering at the University of Colorado, Boulder.
“Dorea brings a wide breadth of meaningful experience to the Museum,” said Todd Smith, the Museum’s executive director. “We are excited that our national search has produced such a stellar candidate.”
Ferris earned an undergraduate degree from Williams College and an MBA from the University of Michigan. Before embarking on a career in fundraising, she worked in the for-profit sector with positions at The New York Times, PepsiCo, and Citicorp in the respective roles of senior financial analyst, financial planner, controller, and policy advisor.
“I couldn’t be more excited about coming to the Tampa Museum of Art and joining a like-minded group of museum-goers, supporters and board members who understand how important art and culture are to the life of a city,” said Ferris.

Pride & Passion This Saturday
Celebrate diversity in our community and join the Museum for the seventh annual Pride & Passion, presented by Wells Fargo, on Saturday, May 19 from 8 p.m. to midnight.
Pride & Passion is one of the Museum’s most important annual events, and is the official kick-off to St. Pete Pride, a month-long event that honors the many people who have fought over the years for LGBT equality.
The first Pride & Passion was held in 2006, and since then has grown each year, bringing in new memberships and raising funds in support of exhibitions and educational programs. Last year’s Pride & Passion raised nearly $70,000 and this year’s event is hoped to surpass that amount as more than 800 people are expected at the Museum for a night of art, entertainment, food, and drinks.
Tickets for Pride & Passion are $75 for individuals and $150 for two. Ticket price includes an annual membership to the Museum, plus food by Timpano Italian Chophouse, wine by Barefoot Wine, beer by J.J. Taylor, specialty cocktails by Tito’s Handmade Vodka and entertainment by DJ Michael Terrance and New Century Dance Company.
That evening’s guests can also enjoy all Museum exhibitions on view, including A Hundred Years – A Hundred Chairs. Masterworks from the Vitra Design Museum.

Iranian Gay Men To Be Hanged For Sodomy: Report
Four Iranian gay men are due to be executed for sodomy under their nation’s Shari’a laws, Pink News is reporting. The four men — identified by the Human Rights Activist News Agency in Iran as Saadat Arefi, Vahid Akbari, Javid Akbari and Houshmand Akbari — are set to be hanged after their guilty verdict was approved recently by high court judges.
“I am horrified and saddened to have heard the news about these four men,” London-based Iranian human rights lawyer Mehri Jafari is quoted by Pink News and LGBTQ Nation as saying. “Not only with regards to the execution which is about to take place, but the fact that is beyond our control.”
The news comes just two days ahead of the release of a new report on lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people in Iran, which will highlight the problems they face in their own country and when they flee into exile, according to Gay Star News.
“If I said I saw myself as being part of this society, I’d be telling the biggest lie of my life,” one contributor is quoted in the report as saying. “That’s because of my homosexuality and the Iranian people’s mentality about homosexuality. I usually refer to Iran as ‘your country’ instead of ‘my country’ or ‘our country.'”
The contributor, identified only as a 26-year-old gay man from Bandar Anzali, a harbor city on the Caspian sea, added, “Words can’t describe how important the Internet is for me…Because I live in a really small city, where the homosexual community is very secretive. The only way for me is the Internet
In April, The Guardian reported that Ayatollah Abdollah Javadi-Amoli, an influential cleric and an Islamic scholar based in Iran’s holy city of Qom, referred to homosexuals as inferior to dogs and pigs in a speech.
“If a society commits a new sin, it will face a new punishment,” Javadi-Amoli said, according to The Guardian‘s translation of a report by the Iranian news website Khabaronline. “Problems like AIDS did not exist before.”
