Documentary, Poets to Benefit GaYBOR

Cigar Magazine presents “Censor This!” on Thursday, January 5 at 7 p.m. at The Buzz, 710 Harbour Post Drive on Harbour Island.

This event will feature the latest film in Cigar City Magazine’s monthly documentary series, the 20-minute documentary “UnBanned.”

UnBanned: In June 2005, five of the Hillsborough County Commissioners voted to ‘ban’ Gay & Lesbian events in the county of Hillsborough. The same five commissioners ‘banned’ a Gay & Lesbian book display in a library that celebrated and honored Gay & Lesbian authors during Gay Pride month. In 2005, censorship was alive and well in Hillsborough County.

Following the film, poet and author, Venus Jones and Friends will perform during an open mic poetry session called, “Dear Haters”

All poets are invited to bring their poems about diversity, pride, tolerance, and unconditional love to the Buzz for a night dedicated to freedom of speech and expression.

The event will also be visited by Mitzi Gordon’s Bluebird Books Bus. Bluebird Books (
www.thebluebirdbus.com) is a mobile project space housed in a converted short bus – part bookshop, part art house, all literary – celebrating the art of the book in all forms. The bus will feature a host of LGBT and counterculture book for the event.

Admission is a $5 suggested donation. Proceeds will benefit GaYBOR District Coalition.

The GaYBOR District Coalition is dedicated to forming a broad-based coalition, representative of the various interests of GLBT owned and friendly businesses, property owners, and residents for the purpose of promoting economic growth in the Ybor City National Landmark Historic District and prosperity of its members.

This event is part of Cigar City Magazine’s monthly documentary series. Every second Thursday of the month at 7 p.m. at The Buzz, Cigar City Magazine presents a documentary about Tampa.
